Ranking the Bowls

26. Hawaii Bowl, Nevada (8-4) vs. SMU (7-5), Dec. 24: SMU is in a bowl for the first time since 1984. This will be a homecoming for Mustangs coach June Jones, who used to coach at Hawaii. SMU loves to throw the ball and Nevada can't defend the pass. Nevada loves to run the ball and SMU has trouble stopping the run.

That pretty much sums it up

Thank god we are ranked ahead of the Temple game. I have heard ESPN mention Temple being in a bowl and how they have been on a 30 year bowl drought several times now. Meanwhile I have barely heard anything about our bowl! Which you would think would be a much bigger deal historically !?

Taking into account the location and player rewards, exclusive of the BCS bowls, I think if I were a player, coach, or AD member, I would rank the Hawaii Bowl my 5th choice of all remaining bowls, and then only because of the "prestige" factor.

1. Capital One Bowl
2. Cotton Bowl
3. Outback Bowl
4. Liberty Bowl
5. Hawaii Bowl

Hell, if you were a player, would you rather go to Shreveport and play in the Independence Bowl like Georgia and aTm, or go to the Sun Bowl in El Paso like Stanford and Okie than the Hawaii Bowl?

I think the Hawaii Bowl is a pretty cool tie in. Although, I do still like the name "Aloha Bowl" better.

Just MHO.

By the way, I know that SMU21TCU10 meant "ranking" as bowl matchups. But I took the opportunity to Hi-jack the thread and rank the bowls according to which one I'd want to play in if I were a player.

Historically, no team has ever had to come back from a DP. So ours would be bigger deal.

ESPN has the Hawaii Bowl ranked in the middle of the pack:

16. Sheraton Hawaii Bowl
Nevada vs. Southern Methodist
8 p.m. ET, Dec. 24

SMU coach June Jones returns to the beautiful islands after leading the Mustangs to their first bowl game since 1984 (before they were given the NCAA "death penalty"). Hawaii's past two seasons only felt like NCAA probation after Jones left. The Warriors will have to slow down Nevada's high-potent running game, which features three 1,000-yard rushers.

Warriors? Nice work, Schlabach.

You beat me to it :!:

Did the Hawaii Bowl take the place of Aloha, or is it still played too :?:

Haven't had to look at the list in 25 years.
May the forth be with us.

They tried to move it to San Francisco in 2001 but lost the certification.
