Waters Replacing Cavan?

Post by Dirty Bird »

Sources tell me that former Dallas Cowboy defensive back Charlie Waters has emerged as the top candidate to replace Cavan next season. However, Waters is balking because of the dire straits our program is currently facing.
Waters was the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos in the late 1980's.

Dirty Bird,
Normally, you're an idiot, but I like this rumor you're hearing. Waters was a great player in his day, one of the toughest around. Then as a coach with Denver, I think he was in a few losing Super Bowl efforts. Nothing wrong with that, though. Getting that team into the playoffs with Karl Mecklenburg and the cast of no name spares was a credit to him.
I say bring Charlie Waters on. He's a good guy, knows winning, and might help us get back to some respectability.

You guys are getting ahead of yourselves. Yes, there has been a lot of "talk", mostly on the SMU internet sites, about the possibility of SMU's football program having a new coach next year. Yes, Charlie Waters has been spotted at Ford Stadium on game day...but unless your source is Jim Copeland or a booster who can write a check to pay the balance of Cavan's contract, I wouldn't get too excited about this rumor.

Before this season started, the pundits said the word was that Cavan had to win 7 games this year to save his job. I personally believe he could get another year by going 5-3 in WAC play, especially if we are competitive in every game for the rest of this season.

Call me overly optimistic, but I would not be shocked to see these Mustangs win their next 4 games and come into the Fresno game with a winning record and some serious momentum. That's obviously what this program desperately needs RIGHT NOW. If that scenario was to unfold, considering the way we have played Fresno the past couple of years...well, it could be a pretty exciting time at Ford Stadium Nov. 10th.

Slow down there, CP, you're drunk on the SMU Kool-Aid. We have an excellent chance at being 0-7 going into the Nevada game. It's time for a shakeup.

It seems to me, you may be smoked up on whatever it is you list that you like to smoke.I like what CP has to say. I don't especially want Cavan to stay, but I definitely want us to win. I would rather have a little confidence after the NCS game, and hope the momentum continues into conference. Yes, we may lose 7 in a row, but I don't think so. There are hundreds who will agree with you on MM.com, though. Not too many here will, I don't think. I could be wrong. Now, continue smoking!

I didn't say I expected this team to roll off 4 straight wins and then shock Fresno. I said it wouldn't shock me to see it happen. I don't know what to think about this team anymore, but I'd like to think we can be competitive in WAC play.

Until Turner et al are ready to put the right resources into Athletics, we truly cannot blame Copeland nor can we blame Cavan. For what Cavan has i.e. talent, recruiting, and program wise, he isn't doing that bad of a job. He almost pulled it off vs. NC State. Let's see what Cavan is capable of doing - with the recruiting class he has going this year, these rumors may shake up some recruits interest in SMU.

To the boosters out there, light a fire under Turner to return the resources to refuel Mustang Mania and SMU Athletics. The stadium is a large step in the right direction, now give the budget to bring in a big name coach - or stop complaining about Cavan and Copeland. Copeland was AD at UVa, what other former ACC AD or other major conference AD will go to SMU for that matter.

I say lets see how the team does. How 'bout this scenario - Overtime victory over then-undefeated and top ten Fresno State on November 10, in front of a packed house at Ford Stadium.

smu'06: Therein lies one of the rubs of being in the WAC....the west coast schools we play have few if any alumni living in the area, so unlike playing a Texas, a Texas A&M, an Arkansas or a Texas Tech who have thousands of alumni and fans in the area it will be almost impossible to fill Ford Stadium for a game with Fresno...no matter how well they are doing. In a metropolitan area the size of D/FW we ought to be able to fill the stadium with our own fans, but until we actually start beating the NC States and the likes of them, that won't happen. I like your spirit though...keep it up!!!

Go Mustangs, beat Hawaii (who also have few local fans)!!!!!!!!!
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Back to the original topic of this post...

Admittedly, I don't know anything about Waters' ability to coach. But he does bring one key ingredient that I believe is necessary. The name.

Charlie Waters isn't just a coach. He was a Pro Bowl player and is a local legend. I think that almost guarantees a much higher degree of local press coverage and Metroplex fan appeal (especially disenchanted Cowboys fans pining for the Doomsday Defense days). Plus, his ties with the Cowboys organization should/might mean something to recruits (I know it would've meant something to me).

Don't know if Mr. Waters is the best choice, but you must admit, he's certainly an extremely interesting and appealing possibility.

What's the report on him as Oregon's coach from both the recruiting and coaching perspectives?

Do you really think current High School players even remember Charlie Waters? They might have heard his name, but he's probably no more a legend to them than Night Train Lane and Otto Graham. Which makes me feel really old, since I vividly remember Charlie playing for Dallas, and I like to think I'm still pretty young. But many kids today also think Eric Dickerson is an announcer for Monday Night Football.

Mustang Man,
Your argument, on the surface, is logical, but flawed. Waters' lack of fame is nothing compared to the fame Cavan lacks. Cavan was a QB at Georgia in the 1960's, and not much more. Waters has a glitzier track record and roots in this area. Cavan was a virtual nobody, with shaky roots back in Georgia.

Hey Houston P, back off the Bird. If you want to hate and call people out, that's what mm.com is for. (Surely there's no other reason that thing exists, right?)

Charlie Waters sounds even better as a replacement on this Monday morning after a loss.
And I don't want to hear any crap about how Cavan's "hands are tied" by SMU.
