SMU's Jones, Nevada's Ault are quick-change artists

The Nevada-SMU match-up in the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl is noteworthy for its few examples of familiarity and similarity.

The schools shared the same conference affiliation, the Western Athletic Conference, from 2000 to 2004 (SMU joined Conference USA in 2005).

The defenses both have experience defending the opponent's unique offense. SMU is coached by June Jones, who ran the spread offense when he coached at Hawaii (1999-2007), a team Nevada saw annually in WAC contests. And SMU defensive coordinator Tom Mason was at Fresno State through 2007, where he helped the Bulldogs scheme to stop Nevada coach Chris Ault's Pistol offense.

And then there's this -- both coaches know how to quickly turn a loser into a winner.
