Many of the players tell me that the word from some of the team members and staff was that Spurrier(oklahoma) could be the next coach. Also, some said that if Cavan loses to Hawaii, we could have a new coach by next week...

Re: New Coach
for those who are determined to see a new coach at SMU, go to www.charleston.net and follow the links to sports/columnists/Gene Sapakoff and read last Friday's column on Charlie Strong. If we do make a change, he should get a serious look. As a coordinator making about $150k/yr, he's in our price range.

Saw a short piece in the paper here the other day that quoted his head coach, when asked if Strong was ready to be a head coach, to answer absolutely. I thought then as you say above, he would be someone to look at.

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: New Coach
I'll take either one, although I doubt either would leave their current team in the middle of the season to take over the SMU job (especially Spurrier - leaving a chance at a second straight national championship ring to come to SMU?) Don't know anything about either one, except what I've read on PonyFans.com, but based on that information, they both would be an improvement.
At the same time, I'd be amazed if we pull the trigger on Cavan before the end of the season. But if we're going to make a change, the sooner the better, so they can make in-roads with recruits.

Re: New Coach
I don't believe that we'll fire Cavan before the end of the season, but SMU should make the effort of look and promote that we will have a new coach next season. We'll need that out to help recruiting for next year.
Also, we need to know if the administration and faculty senate will approve more funds for a coach, and will they approve giving the coach the chance to recruit as other d1 schools do.

AS for the administration. We are still paying the price for the Peoplesoft failure and first off we need the funds that were cut out to be put back, and then an extra million.
