As soon as it was announced that the SMU Mustangs were headed to their first bowl in 25 years by accepting a bid to play in the 2009 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, the speculation began. SMU head coach June Jones was a revered figure in his previous stint as the head coach at the University of Hawaii, and it was debated whether he would be welcomed back with open arms, or whether he would receive a frosty reception upon his return to the islands.
Even before the team flight arrived Saturday in Honolulu, the reactions began to surface. Hawaiians clearly were upset when Jones left two years ago for SMU, but the majority seem to harbor no resentment toward the former UH coach. Instead, they seem pleased Jones has started to resurrect the SMU program, and are glad he will coach once more in Aloha Stadium when SMU faces Nevada Dec. 24 in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.
Former UH student Andrew Le sat down with PonyFans.com this week to discuss Jones, his impact on Hawaii football and the emotions the state felt when Jones left for SMU.
