Mustang is not a breed...by definition it is a feral (wild) horse. Once a mustang is broken, saddled and has a rider on it's back it is just a horse...period. I would have no problem with a mustang as one of our mascots if it didn't have a damn cowboy sitting on it's back. We aren't cowboys...we are mustangs. Now Peruna isn't a mustang either, but he has been our mascot for over 70 years including our glory years of Doak Walker and later the Pony Express and is a tradition that should be maintained. The relationship of a horse's ability to herding cattle is not germane to our football team. Our team got the name mustangs when SMU President Hyer's secretary looked out her office window at our team practicing and commented that they looked like a bunch of wild mustangs running around out there. At this point in time, Peruna is a lot wilder than those two horses standing in the corner of the stadium.
If they insist on having those two horses at our games in the future, I recommend that they only have a rider on one of them and the other be un-saddled and with a red and blue blanket thrown over it's back with SMU MUSTANGS embroidered on the blanket.
