Let Lutz LeadDoh has brought the program to an embarrassing new low.
Re: Let Lutz LeadI agree. This program should be so much better. Let's see what Lutz has, cause Doh's got nothing
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Let Lutz LeadEver notice it's about the same 10 talking SMU hoops all the time?
Shouldn't that tell us something?
Re: Let Lutz Lead
Yeah, General, I'll admit that I have a problem...I just can't stop following the basketball program. It's probably bad for my health, with as little as they win and how much they make my blood boil. Oh well. I'm sure you feel the same way.
Re: Let Lutz LeadI'm not a big Lutz fan, but under these
circumstances I'd be ok with it. I'd have to seriously look at Geary too for an interim. Geary has the cred players respect. Dude was a very good player@ Zona & has been working a lot with Dia this season. "We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
Re: Let Lutz Lead
Dia certainly appears to be responding. I watched Clemson pass over other more experienced and theoretically more "qualified" assistants to give Dabo Swinney a chance to coach their football program thru the end of a season...and that worked out pretty well. Sometimes you don't know what you've got w/o giving it a try. Assuming we open conference play with non-competitive losses, it may be time...but there are budget issues to deal with and I'm not in position to stroke the necessary check so my opinion doesn't mean squat.
Re: Let Lutz Lead
Geary doesn't have cred w/these players, he was brought in in June. Lutz is the guy that has had the players backs for 3 years, recruited these kids, and been their go between. If he were to work a miracle(which he won't), he knows Texas. Geary has no presence in Texas at all. He's all California/West Coast. That said, I actually like several of the kids Geary has spotted for the staff as prospective recruits, so whatever. Lastly, I don't think they can buy out Doh. It's not about money, it's about his contract having no outs “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Let Lutz Leadi hear you about the no buyout clause, but doesn't that usually just mean it takes a bigger buyout? Doh has a year and a half left on his contract at 500k per it sounds like. If you tell him, look, its just not working out, we are not going to renew your contract. We'll pay you the $750k we owe you for the remainder of the contract, plus a $500k severance or whatever to resign now for the good of the program. Doh would have to take it unless he is independently wealthy. He would be foolish not to take it if offered because he might not find himself in another situation with any leverage.
Re: Let Lutz Lead
Financially speaking, you'd think he'd have to look at it, but this may be his last shot at a head job. If he thought it was going to take 5 years, he may just be stubborn enough to take it 5 years. He's going to land on his feet, so 1.25 mil may be something he think he can recoup in TV etc “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Let Lutz LeadIf his contract is so iron clad in his favor, why can't we just demote him? Why can't Orsini tell him Lutz or Geary is now in charge? We are more than happy to have you as an assistant, but for now one of the other guys is head coach. No coach would stay around because his ego wouldn't let him.
I realize this is unprecedented, but I'm half serious. What would stop us from doing this? #NewLobCity
Re: Let Lutz LeadUnless there is something in his contract that with prohibit it, SMU could just move DOH into some non-basketball position with the University such as fund raising and development. With his ego, he might decide to resign and take a TV gig.
Re: Let Lutz Lead
Great idea. I would also not offer him any money other than the rest of what he is due for this season. This program has really reached bottom. If the Mob boss doesn't do something soon he may start coming under scrutiny as well. IIRC he has hired 5 coaches. Only one has proven to be successful (JJ) so far. His hiring of Doh and the 'K-mart quality' soccer coaches has been a total failure. If you are a business person and one of your employees is wrong 80% of the time how long do you keep him? TOP 25 in all we do should perhaps include top 25 in ADs as well. ![]() GO PONIES!!!
Re: Let Lutz Lead
Sometimes u gotta step back & realize that Lutz did not create man. The dude is responsible for many of the poor recruiting evaluations. A house cleaning is necessary. Saying a former standout player @ Arizona, former pro player doesn't have cred with these kids is very questionable. Texas ties, we don't need that, right? Lutz vs Geary, I go Geary. Don't care how long Lutz has been Dohs boy. "We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
Re: Let Lutz LeadWhatever happens it would be good to see up and comer SMU-ex Gerald Lewis get a shot as an assistant here. He received a graduate degree last year and has been at New Mexico State as an assistant coach for the past two years after coaching college ball for several years in Lousiana. He played BBall in Europe for years and was an All Star there as well. A good guy who deserves a chance here to help advance his coaching career. ( he's not ready for a HC position, so that not what I am proposing)
Re: Let Lutz LeadThere are so many quality coaches out there.
You have hit on an excellent asst choice. Former OU player with local ties, Jeff Webster, would be another. "We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
