Man... the ECU game was painful. My wife-who is not a football fan-could not stand to watch the last ECU kick. When he missed, she left the room and forbade me from discussing the issue in our house. I think we've been very lucky to have a reliable kicker the last few years. Going back to Russell Anderson circa 1990 I vaguely remember a year or two since when we had kicker who was less than reliable. Thioughts?
On another note- it's great to be relevant!! Ponyfans has never had this many posts during Bowl Week!!!!!

A lot of teams underestimate the importance of special teams. In this case, we saw that it hurt ECU. I feel for the guy, as a past kicker myself. Hopefully, his team realizes they also made a few too many mistakes (interceptions in particular), which allowed Arkansas to come back. Although it was mainly his fault, it wasn't entirely. SMU is extremely fortunate to have such a solid special teams unit. Our offense is alive and kicking under Padron. Our defense had a strong showing against Nevada and began to make important 4th down stops during the end of the season. We should not be too far away from really regaining the respect we deserve. Top 25 here we come!

Funny you say that about your wife. My girlfriend was in the living room during the 4th quarter and she was close to tears because she felt so bad that the poor bastard missed 4 field goals. That OT miss almost did her in.

That guy did not look like a kicker and he didn't kick like one either! I would think, hope, that ECU and Northwestern would be looking for a kicker as their #1 recruit!!!! Wonder if their Dads ever kicked for FSU????? LOL

I hope they DON'T recruit a better kicker. I want to beat them in the CUSA Championship game next season.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

In the Caven years - 1996 - we lost to Utah by 4, Navy by 2 and Missouri by 1 (27-26) . . . it is the Missouri game that I remember at the Cotton Bowl - we lost the game BECAUSE of our kicker, who missed two extra points and one field goal. Believe we missed an easy FG in the Navy game too - ended the season 5-6. Believe it was Hernandez or Rios.
Post DP Kickers for SMU . . .
Russell Anderson-->John Stewart--> Daniel Hernandez-->Roy Rios-->Adam Walterscheid --> Jacob Crowley --> Chris McMurtray -->Thomas Morstead--> Matt Szymanski

It was Hernandez who missed in the Missouri game.
And the ECU kicker was a senior who had been 6 for 6 on game winning kicks prior to this night. Sometimes you just have a bad night. Nobody got killed and life goes on.

Ben Crossland was before Hernandez - in 1994 he missed the field goal to win the game against A&M in the Alamo Dome.

I prefer Syzmanski as a punter than as the place kicker.

Can not remember the year but Cavan was the coach. SMU was in Houston playing RICE and we missed two 27 yard field goals. TWO.
Also, could not punch the ball in to score.
