TTech would not want the offense Patterson would bring. JJ would be considered well before Patterson at TTech especially after that offense his team showed last night.

Baylor's Briles declines offer to interview for Tech job

11:56 PM CST on Wednesday, January 6, 2010

By DWAIN PRICE / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News

Art Briles won't be going to Texas Tech after all.

Briles, who has been at Baylor the last two seasons, decided Wednesday to decline Tech's offer to interview and instead will continue the rebuilding process with the Bears.

The Red Raiders wanted Briles to succeed Mike Leach as their head coach. And they figured they had a great chance of landing Briles, who grew up in West Texas, graduated from Tech in 1979 and was Leach's running backs coach from 2000-02.

Briles, however, will look to complete the job at Baylor.

"We're proud to have Art Briles as our head football coach," Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw said, "and we're looking forward to great success under his leadership.

"Basically he decided he's going to stay at Baylor and he declined the opportunity for an interview [at Tech]."

Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said there were extenuating circumstances as to why his school couldn't get an interview with Briles.

"I wasn't surprised," Myers said. "Baylor extended his contract, so he decided he was going to stay there."

McCaw would not confirm or deny if Briles' contract was extended Wednesday.

"We don't comment on contracts," McCaw said. "The bottom line is he's staying at Baylor.

Briles signed a seven-year, $12.6 million contract with Baylor on Nov. 28, 2007. The Bears have gone 4-8 in each of Briles' first two seasons, but he has inspired Baylor followers, and McCaw is convinced the Bears are on the right track.

Meanwhile, it's back to square one for the Raiders.

Myers said he plans to interview at least two more candidates. Sources say they are probably ex-Clemson coach Tommy Bowden and Arizona offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes.

Raiders interim coach/defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill interviewed for the job Monday, and former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville interviewed Tuesday.

Myers said Tech may not have a coach in place until next week. He also said McNeill and Tuberville remain strong candidates to succeed Leach, who was fired Dec. 30.

"I want to get it over with this week," Myers said. "But we'll just have to wait and see."

"I want to get it over with this week,'' Myers said.

Gee, Gerald sorry that this search is inconveniencing you're lunch dates and indoor tennis matches and trips to the saunas.

I read that and assumed that he wanted to get it over with this week because of recruiting. I am glad you are around to let me know that the real reason is his social life.

Agreed. It's clear that JJ wants/needs a unique set of circumstances in his jobs. Like programs that have reached bottom and who's expectations are modest in the short term, where he can have complete control over the entire football program and has the full support of boosters and admin types.

It seems like Tech's people want a Mack Brown type...baby kisser, handshaking, makes the parents comfortable type who will hire great assistants...not a nerdy x's and o's type who will be meddling
