He probably shouldn't campaign in Lubbock.

Doesn't matter about Lubbock as TT Fans are everywhere and the timing for James couldn't be worse...he should postpone this ego trip for the next term so this has a chance to blow over...

Ex-SMU football star Craig James unsure of run for office

12:00 AM CST on Friday, January 15, 2010

By ROBERT T. GARRETT / The Dallas Morning News
[email protected]

AUSTIN – ESPN college football analyst Craig James says he will fight the "welfare state" that Democrats in Washington are promoting, though he's not yet sure if he'll run for office or simply become a highly vocal citizen.

The former SMU star running back, speaking before an audience of conservative lawmakers in Austin, said he knows one thing: He can help the GOP by stirring young people to oppose what he dubbed reckless spending by Democrats.

"All this stuff is going to land right in their laps," James said, delivering a keynote speech at a policy orientation for state legislators conducted by the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative group. "Their grandkids are going to have to pay it back."

James declined to directly answer reporters' questions about whether he wants to run for U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's seat.

"There are a lot of people that are trying to encourage me, all over the state," he said. But, noting that Hutchison would have to make good on a pledge to step down before her term expires in 2012, he said "there is no opening."

James also would not say whether he has met with Gov. Rick Perry and Perry's advisers to express interest in being appointed to the seat.

"I'm friends with Governor Perry," James said. "He's a good man. And he knows of my interest" in becoming more politically active.

James, who lives in Celina, waved off suggestions that his role in the firing of Texas Tech University football coach Mike Leach might harm him as a candidate. He defended his actions, saying any damage caused to him personally is "inconsequential."

He sharply criticized federal legislation to overhaul the health care system as too intrusive and coercive.

However, to support his argument, he used widely circulated and erroneous descriptions of last summer's House version of the legislation – and how government could tap into people's private bank accounts.

The claims have been discredited by groups such as FactCheck.org and Politifact, which say the provision in question would allow patients to pay for medical care the same way they now can pay mortgages or utility bills: by electronic funds transfers from bank accounts.

James also argued that he can inspire young adults.

"The blessing I've had is on Thursdays and Saturdays on national TV ... for 20 years, I've spoken to that young audience," he said. "I'm going to go fist-pump them, make them understand, 'Dude, we need you in the game. You are important.'

James also changed subjects in his speech as he told the lawmakers that he liked pie. One lawmaker in the audience was overheard saying, "you know I heard South Florida coach Skip Holtz tell his team the same thing recently. Pretty Interesting.'' The lawmaker's colleague nodded is head in agreement and then went back to sleep.

Craig James handling of the Leach situation tells me he is not ready to be a US Senator.

He has single-handedly ticked off what should have been one of his most loyal constituencies, those conservative West Texans (and ‘ticked off’ is stating it mildly, read the many blog responses to his potential candidacy).

Cardinal Rule for US Senators - be tactful with your base. CJ failed big time on this.

in politics you don't get to wait for the next Senate seat to come around-that might be 15 years from now when he's 65 with little hope of ever building any seniority. Check out this historical list of Texas Senators

85% of Texans live in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin...West Texas wont make or break him

This is not a political statement, but my gut tells me that the "parent taking up for abused child" group will be more supportive than the "man locks kid in shed" backers.

Here's a transcript of Scott Brown's remarks, as prepared for delivery, at today's rally in Worcester:

Thank you very much. What a privilege it is to share the stage with John Ratzenberger, Lenny Clarke, Doug Flutie, Curt Schilling, Fred Smerlas, Steve DeOssie, and many, many others - and my favorite singer, Ayla Brown.
