I have to agree, at the very least, this hire would bring SOME pub to program initially. And while BG hasnt necessarily had the cleanest past, who's to say he couldn't change. He is a proven winner, recruiter, and coach, and if we took the risk, I cant say I'd be entirely disappointed, Doh is clearly going nowhere with this program..

Why is everyone speculating? TXbball said it is a done deal.

I had the stomach bug and was vomiting for 12 horrible hours, made me miss the game.....I was actually glad I was at home barfing.

JJT: SMU should hire Billy Gillispie

Richard Durrett E-mail | News tips
DMN columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor thinks SMU should chat with Billy Gillispie and try to get him to come to Dallas and turn around the program. Part of Taylor's column:

Steve Orsini, SMU's athletic director, could pick up his cellphone and place a call to recently defrocked Billy Gillispie and ask him to spend a couple of years turning around this dormant program.
Yes, the same Billy Clyde who was recently spotted on YouTube sprinting away from a Lexington TV crew to avoid discussing his job security at Kentucky. Since then, he's been fired.

Memphis coach John Calipari has reportedly accepted an eight-year, $35 million deal from Kentucky.

No, Billy Clyde isn't perfect. He probably wouldn't even accept the job because it's beneath him. But SMU had a brief dalliance with Billy Clyde before he accepted the Texas A&M job.

The Mustangs didn't get him then. Maybe they can get him now.

Obviously, it's a long shot. But it's worth making the phone call.

Do you think Gillispie would consider SMU? Is he the right fit for the Mustangs? Could he turn them around?

Cougars: If the phone doesn't ring, Billy Gillispie, it's UH on the other end (w/poll)

Billy Gillispie suddenly has time on his hands and a set of coaching skills to offer. Gillspie worked wonders at UTEP and Texas A&M, only to work blunders at Kentucky.

College basketball's winningest program is so eager to rid itself of Gillispie, it is willing to do what it takes to get from under the final five years of his contract.

AP
University of Houston athletic director Dave Maggard could pick up the phone and see if Gillispie is interested in returning to familiar territory.

Maggard could, but he won't. Nor will Maggard use e-mail or Twitter or write a message on a bathroom wall.

For one thing, Cougars coach Tom Penders is still under contract. For another, Maggard spelled out on Friday that Penders will be back to coach the team in 2009-2010.

"We have a head coach in Tom Penders," Maggard said. "And Tom Penders will be our head coach next year."

Maggard, in other words, isn't trying to leave himself any wiggle room on that front. He's committed to giving Penders another chance to get UH into the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1992.

"We have done an in-depth evaluation of this basketball program, Tom and I," Maggard said. "And here's the other thing I will say: He expects the team next year to be the best he'd had since he's been here. And I have the same expectation."

UH hasn't won an NCAA Tournament game since the 1984 national semifinals, so fans are always spoiling for change. Gillispie became such a hot commodity after having led A&M to the Sweet 16 in 2007, Kentucky wooed him with a seven-year contract that called for a base salary of $2.3 million.

Kentucky went 40-27 under Gillispie; UH was 45-22 under Penders over that time. On Gillispie's watch, Kentucky missed the NCAAs for the first time since 1991. Gillispie also burned a lot of bridges on his way out of A&M, and don't think that escape the notice athletic directors around the country. He didn't turn into a bad coach overnight, but he also exposed himself as something less than a miracle worker.

Kentucky broke the bank once to lure a soldier of fortune out of Texas. Kentucky broke the bank again two years later to send a soldier of misfortune on his way.

Living in Plano, with zero ties to Plano Texas. Pretty darn close to SMU if you ask me. Look the guy is going to get another gig, I could see Houston as well, but again why is he living in Dallas.

well, what ties does Fraschilla have to Texas? Italian guy from the northeast..and he can walk to any SMU event.

that said, maybe Gillespie is in Plano because once the season's over he's gonna replace CCCC's guy, who is coming down 75 to SMU.

Fraschilla, sin't looking for a job, Billy is. You guys will need a coach seasons end. Sorry this has to end as anyone can see this team isn't being coached.

and you know this how? You are 5 posts deep, all about a guy that in all likelihood we'll never even interview, if our paths were to even cross. Find a new topic

Than he can lead Houston back to the tourney makes more since as the AD is the guy that hired him at UTEP, from what I hear he still likes Billy.

it makes more sense b/c it's a diploma mill too. This isn't the position for Clyde.

Bingo! Maybe this is why you guys struggle to win. And maybe why you might have to take a flier on a down and out Clyde. Look I'd love to see SMU good again in basketball, but some top flight coach or even a real up and comer isn't going to even give SMU a sniff.

Blah. We have funds, facilities, decent enough conference affiliation, and some talent in the pipeline. This isn't some ridiculous rebuild at this point.

I like the positive thoughts Ponydoh...

If we get rid of Doh what are the odds we keep the next recruiting class

I don't want to name-drop, but I've heard that Billy Clyde is interested in The SMU job if it opens up. Of course, he's probably interested in any HC job that will pay him good $
