Dude our coaches have missed on some as well. Bottom line is coaches miss, recruiting services, and we miss. In fact, the coaches at subscribe to several small recruiting services. We are recruiting over the 2008 class because the coaches missed. Some of the 2009 class we will recruit over because the coaches missed. Nobody is perfect and everyone misses. Interesting how some only take extreme examples and not look a the whole. All these people that bash recruiting service need to start their own to see if they can do better.Peruna 2K5 wrote:You can't totally judge a player by his rating on rivals (or scout for that matter). Its a good basis on their skills, but you can't always totally rely on them. They miss sometimes by overshooting (doesn't look like Mitch Mustain was worthy of a 5 star rating) or they undershoot (Chris Johnson, now RB with Tennessee, was only 2 stars).

Easy to see why 2008 had so-called misses. There was almost no time yet a good group came in. Last year JJ and SMU was still a big question mark. When you get momentum you get in on the higher level recruits. It is not a matter of missing as much as what you have to pick from.

And how much of a miss is it when you sit behind 3-4 other 5 Star QBs anyway. Every QB USC Recruits is usually Top 5 in the Nation at his position. That same kid might have been All-Conference at other schools. See 3rd String Miami RB who was probably Offensive Player of the Year at SMU.

Re: Rivals 3-Stars
Talent aside, I think the biggest flaws in high school ratings comes down to the kid himself in terms of matturity and desire to continue to play football and improve. Something that can't be measured, but only judged. The desire at 17 often fades when they begin to realize at 18-19 that this is more and more a business. Couple that with the adjustments of leaving home and attending college is difficult enough for the average student, much less a player that was just a year ago the "top dog" in his high school. So much of coaching is keeping the kid motivated and enthusiatic about the sport--June seems to be as good as it gets when it come to that.
