im excited too... im sure if we didnt have shaunbrey lighting it up, literally paving the way for HS RB recruits to see its possible to put up the stats he did, i dont think we would've gotten Fields... its not every day you see a RB put up 1200 yards in a pass oriented offense, especially a June Jones run offense... plus theres a huge upside, believe it or not, hes only been a RB for 2 years...

i told you guys finishing off the season with a win in the hawaii bowl will pay huge dividends in recruiting... a win is still a win, and a loss is still a loss no matter how much you lose by...

Take Fields’ averages from this season, and you might think it’s hard to not find a great moment he gave Madill fans.

There’s a long kick return in Madill’s 3A first-round playoff against Blanchard. Fields sprinted down the Blanchard sideline 80 yards for a touchdown to cut into a 14-3 lead. The Wildcats came up short, 14-11, but Fields made his mark away from offense.

And it was wide receiver Kevin Roberts’ favorite play of Fields’.

“If you make a big play on special teams, that gets you back in the game,” he said.

Three weeks earlier, Fields ended a week of sorrow with an eight-carry, five-touchdown, 297-yard game in a 49-0 win over Lone Grove. His paternal step-grandfather, close friend and cousin’s grandmother all died the same week.

Fields said a week later he didn’t know how he would play against Lone Grove, which had lost to Madill by a point in 2008.

“I guess last year they almost beat us, so I guess I had that in the back of my mind,” he said. “From the first run, all I had to do was stick to the game plan. I had a big gain.”

One not-so great rushing night, however, is Fields’ favorite memory from this season. In week 6, then seventh-ranked Bethany slowed down the running back, holding him to 49 yards on 13 carries, but fifth-ranked Madill came away with a 17-10 win in a battle of unbeatens.

“It showed I stayed in the game and I kept my head,” he said.

Losing to Blanchard isn't anything to be ashamed of. They are definitely one of those schools that has a lot of talent and is continually in the playoff picture in OK high school football. One of the neighboring city rivalries is with a town called Tuttle. Tuttle is where players like Heisman winner Jason White is from. So, that Blanchard/Tuttle area, always has a good crop of talent.

After enduring the last 20 years of SMU football I could get used to never hearing the words "starting true freshman" again.

That won't happen. Even UT starts true freshmen every so often.

I personally like seeing a true FR coming in and earning a starting job (case in point Kyle Padron). That means we might have the guy for 3-4 years or enjoy an even better upgrade at that position.

I am really excited for Fields, but I have a hunch that Pope could be a great steal for us. From what I've heard it sounds like he'll redshirt, especially with his injury, but his combination of size and speed at intriguing. As I recall he was putting up some pretty gawdy numbers before the injury(I know he's in 1A or whatever it is called) and looked great. Maybe he can get even bigger and be a jumbo back like JJ had at Hawaii. I interested to see how he pans out

LH,

I thought you were at Texas Stadium in 1979 when SMU ushered in the Pony Express.

We defeated Rice in our season opener. ED, Craig James and Charles Waggoner all played.

I wish I was. I was still cheering on the Wildcats watching Jeff Courtwright and Matt Dunigan tearing it up.

Pope is already up and jogging. It'll be interesting to see how he handles the jump from 1A, so that might be an issue.... but injury wise I think he's supposed to be close to 100% by August.

As for the "jumbo back," he's supposedly working really [deleted] his rehab and doing a lot of lifting (upperbody) in the mean time. He's put on some weight already (hopefully from just the weightlifting) so you might not be too far off.

ED was from Sealy wasn't he? I know he was highly recruited, but wasn't Sealy like one A or something like that back then?
