When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanMight point is simply this, it should not require an automatic review by some faculty committee. Sure there are exceptions to "justice" in the courtroom, let them be handled on an exception basis, otherwise leave it to the HC.
If the univesity finally comes back into "balance" between the faculty, the administratin and the board, then I would be OK with it. But, as you of all people know the "Model" needed overhalling for years and there was no "balance" in the governance of the university, thus it was never overhalled.
Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanIt didn't happen on campus. But clearly bad judgment was shown by the player involved. He's already admitted to having "consenual sex" with the young woman involved. I'll leave it to JJ and the Administration to sort things out once the case is settled. In the meantime, I'll leave it up to JJ as to what happens in the interim regarding suspension or non-suspension. Also, its kinda a creepy that I'm seeing Trojan ads on this thread.

Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanLet's hold the entire university to the same standards re: "casual sex". We would lose 80% of the sorority and fraternity members, 90% of those attending Meadows and 100% of the faculty.
Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanANYONE can step on a land mine...
Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanI was shocked when I first read the story. I giess I am still in a daze over the recent success SMU has enjoyed. While I attended SMU, the ball players did the same thing. This is the college scene these days. Do I agree with it? Heck no! I was truly raised old school. If you walk into a situation that your not supposed to be in (i.e. alcohol and "casual sex" with unknown person) then you turn around and get out of there. Honestly, I think this is more a problem of Torlan's character, then it is a legal dispute. Sure, there "could be" a law that has been broken. However, everyone that says we should not pass judgement. WAKE UP! Everyone passes judgement on others, this is natural to being human. While I served overseas, I encountered the same thing. Guy goes out, gets drunk and female gets drunk. They have sex, she wakes up and says " Holy @!#$, this is not what I wanted." It happens all over the place, but that is because our society's mind has changed when it comes to this stuff. The first red flag should have been "We're drunk (Torlan and his buddy) and their is a naked woman wanting us to tag team her (if this is the case)." If is appears to be a fantsay, then pinch yourself and WAKE UP.
Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanAs all the lawyers know and most non lawyers - guilty and not guilty are legal terms with legal consequences. They are not synonymous with truth or whether or not someone did any particular act. I believe that whether or not a student athlete should be allowed to continue in the University or on the team should not be based solely on the legal determination of guilty or not guilty. The legal determination should be a major factor, but not the only factor. I do think that there should be policies as to how the University and the Athletic Department will evaluate and make a decision whenever there is an arrest, acquittal, or conviction. I assume SMU has such policies in place and will follow them in this case.
If I were asked to design such policies, I would make suspension from the University automatic upon a felony arrest and expulsion automatic upon a felony conviction. Upon an acquittal I would first have a committee review the matter and determine whether to reinstate the student or expel the student based upon a determination of whether or not the student would pose a danger to the University community. In the case of an athlete, if the University granted reinstatement then I would have a committee composed of the Athletic Director, the student's head coach, and one other head coach decide whether it is in the best interest of the team and student for them to be reinstated to the team. That's just the way I would do it.
Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanThanks for the welcome, things are going just fine.
I think that, as parents, we have the responsibility of teaching our children not to put themselves in a situation that could turn out to be a potential disaster. I remember Evan once telling me that he went to a party at a young ladys house in Highland Park with a bunch of friends. When they arrived Evan noticed that neither one of her parents was there and quickly determined that it would be best to leave. He approached the friends that he had driven there and none wanted to leave, so he left alone. More than once an intoxicated young lady at SMU physically presented herself to Evan and was promptly told "no thanks". In fact, there were many times that Evan "stood watch" over intoxicated peers so that they would not be taken advantage of. Now I'm not saying that my kid is perfect or some sort of angel but what I will say is that we never used nor encouraged the use of alcohol in our home. In a society that accepts as normal the glass or two of wine or a martini etc. after work or with dinner one has to wonder if, as parents, some have condoned alcohol consumption as the "norm". What I will say is, guilty or not (and I sure hope it's not), I bet alcohol played a big part in this whole nightmare. And if these kids could see themselves and their behavior while they are lit to the gills perhaps they would think twice about engaging in behavior that would lead to another drunken stooper. Just my two cents....hope all of you are well too ![]() Mrs. H "THOSE WHO SIN BY SILENCE WHEN THEY SHOULD PROTEST MAKE COWARDS OUT OF MEN" Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanI agree Mamma. None of us are saints, but I certainly agree that part of parenting is imparting that danger signal that hopefully overrides the hormone levels. That's also where friends come into play. If they see a bad situation rather than egg you on into the flames, they need to pull you out.

Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanIs there any update on the Pittman case?
Problems for Torlan PittmanI was wondering this as well.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanStill listed on the SMU webpage...
http://smumustangs.cstv.com/sports/m-fo ... lan00.html And has a Twitter page (protected)... http://twitter.com/TheRealTorlanP And some familiar names on his Facebook page as friends... http://www.facebook.com/people/Torlan-P ... 1121030673 Info about his case? Nada. Crickets. If he's following advice of counsel, he'll have been mute on the subject on these pages anyway. Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.
Re: Problems for Torlan PittmanI guess he has been formally indicted, not good. I hate to come off negative but my friend attorney says it doesn't look good with the little facts we know.
