Interesting Article on 2-3 stars..

Postby Arkpony » Fri Jan 29, 2010 1:09 pm

signed by the Arkansas Razorbacks in the past. The Arkansas Democrat had an article about the Razorback's past signings. Seems many of the 2 and 3 stars went on to outshine and outperform the 4 stars they signed. Several 2 stars became real studs. The POINT BEING (for those on here who will not understand it...you know who you are!) that just because a team signs 2 and 3 stars doesn't mean they won't produce excellent results on the field. Now begin the "Yes..Buts!"... :)

the point being is that is a lot of crap written by people who don't know what they are talking about. I haven't seen Arkansas dominating many of those teams lately with top recruits which are beating their brains in in recruiting. I already can guess one of those "sleepers" they are surely talking about. The OLM who went in the First Round of the NFL Draft last year. The kid came to Arkansas as about a 6-6, 205 TE with outstanding athletic ability and put on 100 pounds in the interim. Did Rivals really miss in that type situation of is that unusual? Is it Rivals job to grade him out of position and project that type of physical growth-I don't think so.

No that is exactly the issue-if those 2-3 stars are so great then why aren't they beating up on the top recruited teams in the SEC.

Have none of you learned yet that Arkansas has not lost a game in years. The officials cause them to be on the wrong end of the score on occasion, but they never lose.

But our current goals are not to beat Alabama and Florida...
we have many more "baby steps" to take.

I know what you are saying. Just responding to the general subject matter which was not specially talking about SMU. That's all.

Agreed.

There is the occasional instance where this happens with teams (Utah's 2 and 3 stars over Alabama) but I'll be thrilled to take all the 4 and 5 stars Arkansas may not want.

You would think if there was ANYBODY who understood the importance of recruiting 'highly ranked' players, it would be SMU fans...or do you prefer more of PB's "diamonds"???

There are always going to be recruits that looked over by the bigger programs who go on to have great college careers or play at the next level. As Stallion mentioned, its impossible for Rivals/Scout to predict a kid filling out 100 lbs on his frame and being a first round pick. All they have to go on is film, offers, and evaluations from campus and combines. Recruiting today is about as close to an exact science as it can possibly be. The advent of 7 on 7, combines, and the internet have made it almost impossible for a topline prospect to go unnoticed. However, take Blake Gideon at Texas. He was a two star recruit out of high school w/ offers from UT and Rice. Kid started as a freshman at one of the most talent-laden programs in America. The key for the SMU's of the world is to be proactive in identifying kids who instead of being 6-2 215 and run 4.4s that get offered by everyone and their mother, to go and identify the kid who is 5-11 175 and runs a 4.4 but might come from a 1A/2A/3A school. I certainly trust June and the coaches here to be able to do that. In closing, you can't fault the recruiting services but you can absolutely find legitimate college players regardless of a star rating.
Back off Warchild seriously.

What should be obvious to everyone is that while higher ranked players will usually outperform lesser ranked players, every once in a while some of those guys end up being great.

It's a numbers game and the chance that a 4 star becomes great is MUCH greater than the chance a 2 star becomes great.

Really not that complicated
