NEW Coach? who will it be?Anybody have any news?
Re: NEW Coach? who will it be?Sadly, no. Who would YOU like to nominate?
Hey, Joe Paterno's not doing too well right now...anybody got his phone number? ![]() ![]() ------------------ "Winning ain't everything...but it's a lot more fun than the alternative!"
Re: NEW Coach? who will it be?while it has become pretty obvious this program needs a change, the fact remains that our current coach remains under contract (as I recall he has 2 yrs after this one). Our athletic budget doesn't afford us the luxury of buying out a coach's contract, so if a change is made I assume it will be funded by well to do "friends of the program". I think the folks who can make it happen have enough class to not have anything happen this early in the season. I expect Cavan to finish this season and let's just hope this team can find the motivation to play hard the rest of the way.
Having said that, our budget is more conducive to hiring a young, energetic, up-and-coming coordinator. There are plenty out there. We need a real "salesman" type because job one is going to be to change the attitude around here and that will be no easy task. When Cavan came in here he was full of energy and immediately pumped some life into the program. Now in his 5th year, I don't see the same energy level or enthusiasm.
Re: NEW Coach? who will it be?I'm sure the folks you mention have infinitely more class than me, however, I think there's also a lot of merit to the thought of getting someone in here NOW who can pump some enthusiasm into this program -- especially before next years' recruiting class starts finalizing their decisions.
While I don't think it's fair to give up on this season, certainly an infusion of ATTITUDE would replace whatever we'd loose due to disruption in offensive philosophy. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: NEW Coach? who will it be?I think anybody's short list would have to include Mike Stoops and Steve Spurrier, Jr.
Mr. Copeland, Pay the $$. Either of these guys' salary would be covered by the second game of year 1 considering the additional 20k paid attendance that would come to watch each Saturday. The money that would come from TV revenue and a bowl birth in year 2 of the program would be gravy. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: NEW Coach? who will it be?I'm with you PerunaPunch!! If not one of them then....Please, get an experienced Div I coach. No more I-aa coaches!!!!!!!
[This message has been edited by PK (edited 10-12-2001).] SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: NEW Coach? who will it be?Not only do we need to pay well for a head coach, we need to improve the salaries of the assistant coaches. One of the reasons places like Nebraska and Florida State are so strong is because they pay their assistants like some schools (read: SMU) pay their head coaches. You'll note those assistants tend to stay at those schools for years and years, building continuity in the way things are run and in their relationships with high school coaches (read: recruiting.)
Get a new head coach, a sound staff, pay them well and turn them loose. Think Maryland is regretting the $1 million boost to the football budget this year? They went out and paid Coach Friedgen, let him pick a great staff of assistants, and last night became the first team in America to be eligible for a bowl bid. Maryland should be the model. They were pretty awful for years. If they can do this, so can we. Proud to be a PonyFan
