Letter to Editor in DMN Blasts Coach Doh

Postby moodymadmen » Tue Feb 09, 2010 4:37 pm

Not sure if anyone noticed this, but in the DMN this past Sunday a letter to the editor ripped Doh. Thoughts???

Irked at Doherty
Re: "SMU 70, Memphis 60 – Doherty puts name on signature win," Jan. 31

I was at the game against Memphis. I was surprised to read that there was a situation that "irked" coach Matt Doherty, in that some players began celebrating with the students as they rushed the court at the end of the game.

I am more irked that Doherty is taking this once proud program in the wrong direction.

During the game, as the team was looking for direction, Doherty could be seen waving his arms frantically trying to get the fans involved.

Doherty had the entire staff dressed as if they were coaching an intramural basketball game.

Coach Doherty, once the game was over, ran around the court looking lost. He stopped to high-five the cheerleaders and the band, then pleaded with his team to come before the band as it played. He was truly a man pleased with beating a 5-2 team, and treating it as if it were a Final Four win.

In order to be a winner, the entire team and staff must learn to act like winners.

I thought the dress was a shout out to JJ & Co to go along with wearing "sneakers" for coaches vs cancer. Memphis paper thought Doh and his staff should've worn suits with their sneakers like everyone else.

I'm not a big fan of the Doh foot stomps and wagging his finger and scowling at players, but if he turned around to implore the crowd, I'm not entirely opposed-there are assistants on the bench in constant communication with the players for 'direction.'

Also glad Doh gathered the team around to go listen to varsity.

As for being irked with celebrating, I'd be scared to death one of the players would get injured.

Anyone see coach K working up the students before a Duke game this year? He was pretty riled up himself; don't know if I'd call it 'lost'. Can't remember which game, but K recognizes that Cameron has become somewhat more docile compared to years past. Moody, well docile would be an upgrade.

1) Pastner and his staff wore something similar to what Doh & Co. wore for the Memphis/Gonzaga game last Saturday.

2) Doh did not gather the team around to go listen to Varsity. He tried to, but they wouldn't stop celebrating. The band did an a capella version of Varsity that was pretty cool because most of the people in the gym stopped and sang in unison.

3) Other than that, your points are right on. The author of the letter needs to get out to more college basketball games.

Doherty kinda painted himself into a corner regarding celebrating after he took Mike Davis to task over the way UAB acted. Think he was wanting to make sure his players handled it in a dignified manner.

Other than that, whoever wrote that letter needs to get a grip, all the comments about the dress, etc. that other posters made were spot on. Also, this "once proud" team hasn't been to the dance or won a title since the early nineties, plenty was broke before he got here.

Sure, we want him to move faster in rebuilding, and maybe a new hire could do it faster, bottom line Doh has plenty of flaws, no need to point out incorrect or superficial ones like this letter writer did.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

I couldn't disagree more with the guy who wrote that letter.

Nothing wrong with Coach (or anyone else) waving their arms. Our fans often sit quietly, and if it takes a 6-8 guy waving his arms to get them loud — and we were very loud that day — great. Do it again, Coach.

Those shirt were made up for the trip to Hawaii, sort of a Hawaiian style shirt without the flowers. They look sharp, and they had to be a hell of a lot more comfortable than the suits they wear at most games. Coaches in Armani suits are almost as out of place as baseball managers who wear uniforms, as if they're going to play. Wear a golf shirt. Or a warm-up suit. Or sneakers. If you win, you can shave your head and wear overalls, for all I care. Be comfortable — nobody goes to games to see how fashionable the coaches are.

Coach always greets people at games: fans, media, band, cheerleaders — he doesn't always get to all of them, but sometimes he does, and he always gets to at least some of them. And is the letter writer suggesting Coach shouldn't have been pleased with a win over Memphis? He's not the one who rushed the floor — the fans are. Coach got the Ponies to beat a good team, and he was excited about it.

So was I.

I just thought he was wearing red for the red-out. I doubt he has a red suit except maybe for Christmas.

I wonder if Orsini wore his red suit for the red out.

That makes sense, too.

basically - Dan needs to get a clue and check his facts. We beat Memphis, yes Doh may have looked lost b/c he hasn't done that before :)

As someone mentioned, exact same outfits as Hawaii, better than suits with white tennis shoes.

How can he look lost? Didn't he tell Mike Davis that he's been in a lot of big games?

I've always thought coaches should have to wear the same uniform as the players. Or at least a suit colored to resemble a jersey like a ghetto prom tux.
