CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!By Jim Vertuno
ASSOCIATED PRESS Updated: 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 Published: 11:08 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds says the Longhorns football program was 'singled out' by a new NCAA rule that drastically limits recruiting by defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, the Longhorns' head-coach-in-waiting. The rule states assistants "publicly designated" to be the next head coach are now bound by the same recruiting rules as the current head coach. That means Muschamp can make only one off-campus visit with a prospect, and it can't be during the critical spring evaluation period of April 15-May 31. Other assistants can have multiple off-campus visits. The only other major college football program affected by the rule is Maryland, where offensive coordinator James Franklin has been designated to succeed Ralph Friedgen. "Obviously, since this legislation impacts only two programs in the country, we feel we are being singled out," said Dodds. "We are exploring our options for legislative relief within the NCAA process, since we believe this places our program at a direct disadvantage. "Will is our head coach-in-waiting but he is also our defensive coordinator, and this legislation restricts his ability to perform his current job duties.'' Texas could try to have the rule changed at the next NCAA meeting in April. The rationale for the change was that recruiting by a "head coach in waiting" creates a competitive advantage for a program at a time when the NCAA has moved to curb off-campus recruiting by head coaches.
Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!
doesnt that mean he would feel they are being doubled out?
Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!Good catch, RGV!
Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!publically undesignate him-problem solved. All they have to do is say Mack Brown ain't going anywhere for 5 years which he basically has said and so they are undesignating him as Head Coach in waiting. NCAA didn't say a thing about private designation and Muschamp is still looking at opportunities which he is. Stupid Rule-its none of the NCAA business what private contracts a university wants to enter into with future prospective employees. Texas gets 90% of their commitments from Senior Days and spring campus visits anyway. If there is any school in the Nation that wouldn't be harmed much by this Rule it is Texas. They'll be just about done in a few weeks

Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!Never underestimate the power of the UT Athletic Director:
"We are exploring our options for legislative relief within the NCAA process,..."
Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!The only answer is for the NCAA to give the University of North Dakota the death penalty.

Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!But UT is a state school funded with public monies. So, does that make the contracts 'private' or a matter of public record and subject to the Texas Open Records Act (public information)?
Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!There has to a Record for the Texas Open RECORDS statutes to be applicable. Now I'm not aware-maybe it is in his Contract-that would be discoverable. I've never read that Texas had a contractual agreement with Muschamp-I kinda doubt they would contractually bind themselves to hire Muschamp under all circumstances. I'm not even sure such an agreement would be binding on Texas since it might be subject to an contractual defense known as the Statute of Frauds since there is no definite agreement on when employment begins, the contractual salary/benefits or the other terms of the future contract. Does Muschamp have an enforceable contract to be the next UT Head Coach? I dunno.

Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!Who does he think he's fooling? Dodds has no interest in competing with the rest of the country on a truly level playing field. The UT athletic department has financial advantages over just about every other school in the country. Dodds has no business complaining about anything.
Wonder why the Maryland AD isn't whining???

Um, speaking of foolish...you might want to check the name of the Maryland AD before you start tossing stones. ![]()

Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!
Yow! Will edit. For those too lazy to click the link: Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow said Maryland and Texas - which has named defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to succeed Mack Brown - are joining to combat the rule.
Re: CRYBABIES AT U.T., AGAIN!!!Yow!..Whether you like Texas or not, they have the express right to complain about this, as it IS unfair and should be corrected. A silly rule.
