It took June Jones only 2 years to take SMU bowling. This is Doh's 4th season, with only 12 scholorships on a bb team, June shouldn't have beaten Doh to post season play. If Doh is allowed to stay, how long will it take him to go to the post season?

Speaking of the comparison, see this quote by Doherty from last November:

“And I think everyone who knows [Conference USA] will tell you it’s a better basketball conference than it is a football conference. Memphis has been one of the elite programs in the country and we’ve had to play them twice [each year.] Tulsa’s a very good basketball program. Houston’s been good. UTEP’s been good. Those are all team’s that we have to play twice.”

“Our football programs are all fairly even. … On top of that, in football, if you go .500 you have a chance to go to a bowl game.”

Just reading some of these comments. What "winning formula", what "system"? Didn't we lose the last two games? Are we not two games under .500? Have we had a winning season under Doherty?

It will take some time to get the guys in here that can actually run this system. The next recruiting class will help. 20 wins next year.****

From top to bottom as a whole CUSA is a better football conference than it is a basketball conference.

How long do we have to wait for opposing coaches to say, "we HAVE to play SMU twice" instead of "we GET to play SMU twice"? At this point, we can't even muster a .500 record.

We're 2 games under .500 and still have vs. Rice, @ Memphis (very hot and cold team), @ East Carolina (who has quit on their coach), vs. Houston (should beat them in Moody), @ Tulsa, and vs. Marshall (another hot and cold team) left.

It's quite possible that we finish .500 for the season. At the very least, we'll win 2 of the last 6. Finishing 4 games below .500 is better than finishing 10 games below .500 which is where this program has been.

It's a FAR better hoops conference historically. The best teams in CUSA can play w/nationally elite hoops programs, not so in football. Those comparing football to hoops just don't grasp the difference in rebuilds. We've been through this tons of times.

Over half the teams in FBS make it to the post-season while less than a third make it to the post-season in men's basketball. Which do you think is easier to rebuild? Those making the comparison aren't looking at all the facts.

that's a farce, especially as it pertains to SMU.

Basketball is much more political and involves more people in the decision process. If you are well-connected and liked by everyone involved then yes it is easier to get 3-4 studs and a top 25 team than in football, but when you are an outsider looking in, it is much more difficult to break barriers in basketball. Unfortunately, SMU has never been and is not yet a hoops haven and Coach Doherty is well connected, but doesn't yet have the traction to pick and choose. The new assistants and his newly found game plan should help us move in the right direction as evidenced by the recent improvement on the court as well as the years recruiting class.

For those that say football is easier to rebuild at SMU than Basketball then why has it taken the SMU football team 25 years to go to a bowl game (ie post season play)?

I really don't think we need to go through that again.
