Re: FireMattDoherty.comcmon man it's coach's bday
Re: FireMattDoherty.com
Posted it because of the line at the top - someone forwarded it to me because that site was apparently active when the UNC debacle happened and yet they are claiming that traffic is at an all-time high right now. Obviously I want Coach to get another year and also wish him a happy birthday!

Re: FireMattDoherty.com
No one can give a logical reason as to why he shouldn't get another year. They'll point to his first 3.5 years here, etc, but the fact is that the last .5 of a year + the incoming recruiting class is signifcant progress. If we hire another coach, look for them to spend 3.5 years lost around here as well.
Re: FireMattDoherty.comcalallen, how are you 25 feet from the Hillcrest track? You live in a storage shed or something?
I am ambivalent about Doherty getting another year. Yes the team has shown a bit more life the second half of the season, but no one can be even close to convinced that Doh is the man that will turn this thing. If he gets a 5th year, next year needs to be alot better and more consistent for him to deserve a 6th and i don't know how that happens without Williams and mccoy's career in doubt. i also think Faye has given us more than people think. He is still the one guy we have that can get his shot off against athletic opponents.
Re: FireMattDoherty.comCan't give a logical reason?!? Please tell me I'm missing a heavy dose of sarcasm because all I can think of are logical, facts-based reasons. He has records of 14-17, 10-20, 9-21, and now 13-14 with a tough stretch coming up that will likely end in this 4th sub-.500 season in 4 tries. His best year was with someone elses players. He can't recruit Dallas. He has lost his current players. He often loses his cool during and after games. He is a subpar X/O's coach. His brand of basketball is beyond boring. Moody is a mausoleum. He blames HIS kids in the newspaper after a loss. He is mad at them for celebrating too much after a nice win against Memphis and then he berates them PUBLICLY after a tough loss...how brutal is that?!? His SMU record now stands at 46-72 which makes the Dement and Tubbs eras look fruitful. 26 games under .500 over his SMU career, a grand total of 0 .500 or better seasons, obviously no post-season appearances, COMPLETE inability to recruit our fertile backyard, and people can't think of logical reasons to fire Doherty? I hope our athletic director isn't this blind.
Re: FireMattDoherty.commadman, you certainly have a multitude of valid points. Since Orsini is joining the NCAA Tourney Selection committee, there is a mantra that he will become very familiar with if he is not already: "the entire body of work". Even grading on the Smu "curve", Dohs entire body of work is very suspect. Most damning point is that fan interest is clearly at a dismal low right now, mausoleum is probably understating it.
Re: FireMattDoherty.com
System is in place now, and we're recruiting well for the system. The team is playing w/heart, so it's bunk to say he's lost the team. We're playing noticeably better then at any point in the last 4 years. Style of play doesn't put people in seats, winning does, and we can do that w/this style w/some roster tweaks. Nobody likes that it took 4 years to get the right model. Nobody enjoys the personnel gaffes we've had in the past, see 7 man class. That said, things are looking better and we're finally recruiting w/a plan in place. Why start over when we're finally starting to look and feel rebuilt. Losing Williams hurts from a point production stand point, but team play will improve. I won't lose a wink of sleep over Faye 'graduating.' People are nuts if they don't see the value of the princeton at SMU. It's like CUSA kryptonite. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: FireMattDoherty.comfair enough thought process, I am just not sold by what I see and feel. I also hear rumbling that the recruits coming in might not be a slamdunk to get through the clearinghouse. Second hand info, but we'll see. I know you like the Reggies and the lift they have given Doh on the recruiting trail. I would factor that in to any decision, definitely, but I still have the rhetorical question in my mind of what if one or both of them gets a better offer like assistants at mid majors often do. Then what? Do we have confidence in Doh as a program builder is still what it comes back to.

Are you sure he has ever had the team?????????? If not, then it is accurate to say, "it's bunk to say he's lost the team."
Re: FireMattDoherty.com
Clearinghouse issues exist, as they do w/any Euro's or kid's waiting on scores. Both Euro's will have their amateur status analyzed, simple as that. Smith still has to some work to do w/regards to qualifying, but that's not uncommon at this stage of the game. I'm not sure any of it is worth getting worried about right now, but I don't think what you've heard is wrong per se. I like the Reggie's, but I know who else they interviewed for those positions, and we'd have been in good shape w/several of them. If they were to jump ship, that would hurt mostly b/c we need stability to be good. Beyond that, I love the kids Geary prospects out west. He has a nice eye. If Brown can pull Holmes, he'll have earned his pay. I'm not sold b/c results matter. That said, the plan makes sense to me now. I've never felt we should try and out-athlete diploma mills. You have to have a different tact and we seem to now. We need shooters & passers to make it work, though. Also, a PG to make it run, not a lead guard “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. Re: FireMattDoherty.com
Blah, they are busting their [deleted] in practice and on the floor. The product is improved and they care. We all want more wins, but let's not just make ish up to prove a point “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. Re: FireMattDoherty.comIf we win one more game we will have equalled our best season under Doh. Not to mention we are already having our best season in CUSA. Win 2 or more and this will be Doherty's best season at SMU. While it has taken longer than it should or than anyone expected, I think we are on the right path. It would have been rash, but understandable to fire him after last season. However, it would only set us back that much longer if we fired him now that we have some traction.
Re: FireMattDoherty.com
You ever hear the SMU tune "Shanty Town?" "Just a real cool place and it's built way back, about 25 feet from the Hillcrest track..."
