Postby NavyCrimson » Fri Oct 12, 2001 12:55 pm

i just read the article on soccer that on the front page (ponyfan website) & it was very interesting.....but a question.....

why don't we play our soccer games on a saturday before or after the football games @ ford in order to get the people in the stands for the soccer games ... i can't help but think this is another stupid move from our athletic dept marketing ... i hope i'm wrong but what gives???? please prove me WRONG!!!!!!!

thanx in advance for an answer.

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Probably the fact that the grass is painted with the wrong stripes just for starters.

Probably the fact that the majority of people the go to football games don't like soccer.

i'm not talking about the same field - knothead!

but why not take advantage of an existing event when the crowd is just a couple of yards away either before or after the game???

Before the football game might work except it would interfere with The Boulevard experience. After the football game would probably not be good either....after sitting through another losing effort everyone is probably ready for a stiff drink. Besides, a total of five continuous hours of sports would do most wives and small kids in.

What the soccer team needs is just some good ole marketing to let people in the area know when the games are being played. Unfortunately our miserly marketing budget is barely able to take care of football and basketball. Someone needs to clue these people in who make the budgets up....like any other business, you have to spend money to make money!!! That includes investing in the product to make people want it ,i.e., paying to get the right coaches, etc. The return on that investment should bring in enough revenue that even the soccer team could have some decent marketing.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

too many football fans are too busy having a cocktail or 12 on The Boulevard to find their way to Westcott.
