2011 WRs

According to the roster on SMUMustangs.com, there are 11 wide receivers coming back: Cole Beasley, Charles Clay, Bradley Haynes, Marcus Holyfield, Darius Johnson, Chayse Joubert, Cole Loftin, Deonte McDade, Aldrick Robinson, Ryan Walker, Terrance Wilkerson. In addition, SMU signed five in February: Ricky Collins, Kyle Guinyard, Jeremy Johnson, Keenan Holman and Arthur Londy. If, as has been suggested, Collins goes the JC route, that still means there are 15 receivers (plus walk-ons) coming to two-a-days in August.

It makes sense that receivers want to play in Coach Jones' offense, but he also has said (and shown) that he doesn't use a deep receiver rotation, that he prefers to basically run four guys until they can't go anymore.

So with all that said, how many WRs does SMU sign next February? Robinson and Wilkerson will be seniors in the fall, so there is a need, but I wonder if it will be limited to two or three this year.

First, I don't know, but I would bet that the situation is similar to the linebacker position. We will only take those cases where talent and potential is extremely high, perhaps exceptional, better than what we have successfully recruited in the past. The total number of positions available, probably depends upon how successful we are at recruiting other positions of need, like defensive tackle and offensive lineman.
Then again, I would suggest that we should be considering how many we will have a year from now, when these 2011 recruits would be joining the program, rather than this fall. June always takes a number of receivers and we also to be missing some really tall receivers, many of our current receivers look like they came from the same mold.
Like I said, I don't really know, but that's my guess.

Until those young guys prove themselves, they can't really be counted on. I'm not saying they can't play, just that they haven't done it yet in games. In JJ's offense, I'd say receivers are like quarterbacks — can't have too many.

Haynes is used only in TE-hback roles, Wilkerson will be a redshirt junior. At least a couple of the incoming freshmen, will redshirt or greyshirt.

True, but JJ said at on Signing Day that he "underused" Haynes last year, and would like to use him more this season — presumably as a receiver, not just a blocker.

Plus, I bet at least one freshman DB recruit (Acker?) ends up on offense.

I'd like to see Haynes have a bigger role next year. When he has had a chance, he makes plays. He's no longer just a tall guy ... that guy is really strong and runs well. I'd think he could be a major weapon.

This is not an exaggeration... If you slapped a different jersey on Haynes you'd swear he was an NFL player. He's that big and strong. He was been described as a bigger Michael Irvin.

Not sure why he wasn't thrown to more often, other than the fact that there are only so many opportunities to pass around. I don't think I'd get much argument by declaring Sanders as our "possession receiver" last year. I think more of those kind of throws could go to Haynes next year with Robinson and Wilkerson continuing as the deep threats and Beasley and DJ doing a little of everything.
