JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETEveryone's favorite (honest) columnist Jean Jacques Taylor was just on with Norm and absolutely killed Doherty and SMU doing his best Stephen A Smith impersonation. He basically regurgitated everything he said in his column on Tuesday and added that "he respect Doherty for having a philosophy, but that philosophy is so stupid" in regards to recruiting. His prime example was Myles Luttman who averaged a mere 5 pts and 4 rebs in JUCO yet was offered a scholarship...and finished the season here averaging 1 rebound and 0.8 points. Taylor went off about offering a random guy in San Diego with mediocre at best stats a scholarship while neglecting our fertile backyard and said Doherty foolishly neglects DISD and AAU. He said he understand the big boys are going to Texas, Oklahoma State, etc but to not even be in on the 2nd or 3rd tier of local high school players is a disgrace. And I know some of you don't want to here it, but he said if June Jones could propel football to a dominate bowl win in year 2 then surely basketball can be turned around quickly but Doherty has been unable to lead us to even .500 in 4 years
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETglad someone said it, even if it was JJT
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETI'd care more about JJT if he'd research what he said first. Foolishly neglects DISD and AAU...not true in the least. No, we haven't gotten any players out of there, but that's not for lack of trying. It's because we "wronged" those guys.
Luttman was one of the big mysteries to me.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETWell at least we're not completely irrelevant since that is the biggest audience that just listened to anything SMU Basketball-related this season!
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
+1 If we're irrelevant, as JJT put it, why does JJT keep talking about us?
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETyes, gotta agree with Taylor on each of those points. The Luttman/Clink class was pretty unforgivable for year 3 of Dohs tenure. To bring in marginal jucos in such a critical recruiting year was a major killer that almost prevents him from being able to overcome his first class of 7 which bombed.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETIf he killed Doh can we cancel the remaining payments on his contract and find a new coach?
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
No, because he killed us too.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETThe Luttman scholarship was unforgivable. Would love to hear what exactly he saw in that guy. Yeah he's big, but extremely uncoordinated and stiff. C'mon Orrsini, let's get something done now. Txbball - where you at? Heard anything else since the massacre last night? I do like the recruits we have coming in, but if you look at the espn conference rankings - it's about average with other teams in the conference. Most have higher rated players...Sigh...
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETDon't forget about Kwiatkowski...........
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
Something tells me that TK can play, he just doesn't want to. Luttman, on the other hand, can't play.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
The biggest problem w/Doh has been coaching staff turnover, in which he shares a load of the blame. Lutz has been working the job of multiple guys for years, and only now has real road warriors. 7 Assistants is insane in 4 year stretch. W/that much turnover, it's inevitable that you're going to have to scramble during certain critical evaluation periods. You have to imagine that Luttman & Clink were caught up in that. Clink will end up being valuable, though. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
I disagree that we "wronged" those guys. The reality of the situation was that the DISD coaches lobbied for Tubbs, but never bought into him and his coaching style. They gave him a bit of a wait and see before supporting him beyond mere verbal support. Maybe that wait and see was because of SMU's past program issues, elitest school reputation and/or their concerns re his past HS program and conduct. Bottom line is that, for what ever reasons, they did not step up to support him which he challenged them to do. You can make a case that the DISD coaches let Tubbs down big time. If anything they "wronged" him though failure of support. Those very close to the program at that time advised me that he restored discipline and order to a program that was much too loose and out of order. He installed a good philosophy and the team showed much progress. Over time he became alouf and isolated himself from the kids and was always critical with little praise or feed back. He became increasingly dogmatic, very stressed and even tougher and more critical with no praise and a loss of connection with the team. His last season the team was on egg shells and he was on the bubble re losing the total respect and loss of the team. The more he became stessed with every loss the more he pressed and everything started collapsing. He totally lost the team by the end of the season and the team was in revolt. In the interim, this festering situation was long known and things ( real or perceived) continued to quickly filter back to the local area HS coaches. In the interim, the HS coaches simply were not going to send kids to SMU as the situation evolved. At the end, those close to the program fully recognized the crisis of the situation and that it could not continue without totalling the program. The kids, to their credit, showed much class and held the problems to themself and limited their concerns and comments to appropriate SMU officials. Tubbs was fired because he simply isolated himself from the team, lost their respect, confidence and the team was in open revolt.

We didn't, but that's not what they'd tell you.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
Hiring a new, proven coach is the greatest way to solve this problem. Warriors are willing to seek out a successful general. The desire to succeed is greater than all else in those who live for the thrill of victory. SMU could not recruit SMU under Bennett, but June Jones has done so with success. I expect similar results would follow the hiring of a successful basketball coach. Far East Conference
