SPRING PREVIEW: Quarterbacks

Postby PonyPride » Mon Mar 22, 2010 3:28 am

Spring practice is rapidly approaching, and in SMU's Run-and-Shoot offense, no position endures more scrutiny than the quarterbacks. Last year, the Ponies began spring workouts with a quarterback who had 12 college games under his belt; this year, they have just two passers on the roster: one with just six college games (and a bowl MVP trophy), and another who spent last season running a different offense every week.

SMU assistant head coach/offense and quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison visited recently with PonyFans.com to discuss Kyle Padron's development, what he expects from J.J. McDermott and what he looks for from quarterbacks to show how they are progressing.

In covering the Ponies, you guys are simply without peer — this is great stuff.
I particularly like your interviews with Coach Morrison. He strikes me as a very thoughtful, insightful guy who looks way beyond a player's height, weight, etc., and is more interested in what the player thinks on each play. I find his interviews fascinating.
Thanks for doing what you do.

Always enjoy your insightful articles. Funny how last year during the season that the only information from any coaches was that Kyle wasn't ready and even after he was thrust into action and winning football games, "he was only beginning to know what he was doing." It would be nice for a coach to come out and say, "You know what, sometimes we just miss on a kid and he is ready to go as a player and all he needed was a chance!" Kyle was fantastic.
