SPRING PREVIEW: Offensive line

Postby PonyPride » Sun Mar 28, 2010 3:00 am

As the Ponies gear up for spring workouts, the SMU offensive line resembles a M*A*S*H unit, as four players — tackle J.T. Brooks, center Bryce Tennison, guard Jordan Free and guard Joey Fontana — will sit out after offseason surgeries.

Because of the injuries and the graduation of senior Mitch Enright, the Mustangs go in to spring workouts with just nine healthy offensive linemen. SMU offensive line coach Adrian Klemm visited with PonyFans.com to discuss who is healthy enough to participate this spring, his expectations for the line and his assessment of just how good some of the Ponies' top linemen can be.

Thanks....great interview and good stuff. Sounds like we have the makings of a good OL with depth still being a concern, but the OL program is in good hands for years to come with Klemm.

I think Favreau is going to make a real push to start at the guard spot. That dude is a beast!

Isn't Favreau the one PonyPride said had put on 50 pounds in the last year?

I agree with you about Klemm. Every time I hear something from him I am impressed. I love the vision of wanting to get more length over the next few years and having a plan (recruiting only guys who played tackle in hs).

That's 50 quality pounds? Like it wasn't "gee that guy needs to lay off the cheeseburgers" but "whoa...he got huge"? Either way wow.

Definitely quality pounds. The man looks like he has lived in the weight room since the minute he walked on campus. I'm guessing he has found the cafeteria, too.

SMU finally entering 21th Century by recruiting the 6-4, 6-5, 6-6+ Offensive Linemen. Really didn't understand what Bennett was thinking-or even June Jones and the previous Offensive Line Coach who kept talking about targeting the 6-2 or 6-3 guys across the board. With Jones I think it must have had a lot to do with the anomoly of having easy access to the great athletic Samoan type players-there aren't many Samoans in Texas. And this ain't the WAC. In pass protection you want tall, athletic guys with long arms and good mobility. The exceptions are truly great athletic offensive line with superior strength and quickness. Of course, this means we can't keep recruiting Phil Bennett's 5-11 QBs either. I'm a definite go on this change in recruiting strategy.
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

I chalked the short offensive lineman talk to mean "right now, we're taking shorter guys because we're not willing to sacrifice athleticism for height so that's what we'll take until we can get taller, athletic lineman".

Another great article. Thanks for all the hard work!
