RYAN SMITH: Playing it safe

Postby PonyPride » Sun Apr 11, 2010 7:31 pm

One of the more common axioms of coaching says that teams are coached during the season, while individual players are coached during the spring. This is the time of year when replacements are found for graduating players, and when players move to new positions.

With the graduation of Rock Dennis — the SMU Mustangs' 2009 leader with five interceptions — the strong safety position is up for grabs. Junior college transfer Justin Sorrell will enter the competition when he arrives for preseason workouts in August, but as of now, sophomore-to-be Ryan Smith is working with the first team.

Smith is the son of a former SMU wide receiver, and is being asked to learn a new position after being recruited to SMU as a cornerback. He visited with PonyFans.com to discuss the battle for the strong safety spot, and how he is progressing at his new position.

It's one thing for a lineman to put on a lot of weight, but 25 pounds for a DB says to me has put in some major time in the weight room.

If we don't have a clear-cut starter at strong safety, I like the idea of having two (or three) solid players who can really push each other.
