Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV Viewers

Postby PonyKai » Wed Apr 21, 2010 2:56 pm

June Jones chatted with the student senate recently. 540 million people watched SMU play in the Hawai'i Bowl? Is this like when he said it costs 60,000+ a semester to attend SMU? Also, we get to look forward to this!

"Jones said the athletic department is ramping up some new traditions. The two mustangs presented to SMU by philanthropist Madeleine Pickens, wife of billionaire T. Boone Pickens, will be christened with new names in an upcoming ceremony. Details are forthcoming. In addition, last season, players and students marched with the live mustang mascots in the “Mustang Walk” from Moody Coliseum to Ford Stadium. Jones encouraged all students to join in starting at the first home game Sept. 11, against the University of Alabama at Birmingham."

I guess that makes me seem like a bitter hack but 540 million seems a bit excessive and Jones has occasionally tossed out some numbers that are a little bit off the mark. Anyway, he had some good points overall and here's the link.

540 Million? Really Hayden Fry. I saw that yesterday and chuckled. I was waiting for someone else to think that might be a tad of an exageration. Did they cancel Christmas this year or something.\

And Maybell and Cowpoke already have a name

In Japan, yes. An entire country was united in the viewing of this victory! For shame that it was not your own.

Hmmm... that's close to double the population of the entire United States, so, yeah... I'm guessing that number is a a bit off. Just a bit.

542 million may not have watched, but the outside research shows 540 million people were exposed to the SMU brand based on our bowl berth... The media value was over $30 million!

Last time I looked, students, alumni and the band marched down the Vard to the stadium with Peruna.

i would think most people could care less if June Jones makes an occasional speaking mistake...
as long as he keeps improving the program!

June might want to check with the student body who recently elected a student body president who campaigned on a platform including the words "Peruna is MY mascot."

Next time SMU can give that money to an alum (me), and I can throw out crazy big numbers for you too. And to back it up I will send you a fancy spreadsheet with complicated equations. I studied Economics after all, I know about the multiplier effect.

Kidding aside, bowl game and winning = exposure.

I suspect June doesn't give a rat's [deleted] what anyone else wants or thinks. It's his team and the fact that the letters SMU are on the jerseys is of no concern to him ...at least that is my impression...

Do you wait for opportunities to suck June off?

Just curious as to why you never post unless someone points out a JJ mistake....

I love JJ, although I thought we would be recruiting better, but these horses suck and they aren't mascots to me....they are a terrible idea...I better see Peruna a lot more than them or I will be pissed....
