Re: Daily Campus strikes againIn case some of you didn't notice-this ain't about SMU cheating in the '80s-its about whether the Board of Trustees should be transparent in disclosing basic information about their actions. That's a topic of legitimate debate by a university newspaper.
I'm getting kinda of a kick out of this Daily Campus Editor having the balls to use the best possible example in SMU History of why transparency in university goverance might be desireable. I think there is another side you will likely see tommorrow discussing efforts made by SMU to diversify the university goverance after the Death Penalty which has been a positive I truly believe. SMU is no longer controlled by 3 Men who did just about anything they wanted. Change was needed. But diversity in goverance doesn't really fully address the transparency issue. I'm sure some unfortunate administration soldier is typing away at a rebuttal as we speak just as there was a counter-point to the argument that SMU is running huge athletic deficits. Its the beauty of Freedom of Speech-the actual exchange of ideas. On a university campus in the 21st Century-on SMU's campus for god's sake. I'm not nearly as concerned with vigorous debate of legitimate issues as some of you. The world will not be thrown off its aixis and SMU will not succumb overnite to the clutches of Leninism. There are few voices at SMU -I do believe-who may be able to argue for a more authoritarian university structure. So don't get your panties in such a wad over a newspaper article. This is the most impressive display of Journalism I've seen on this Campus in years. This Editor of the Daily Campus is actually holding the administrations [deleted] to the fire. Can't wait for the rebuttal. GO PONIES! PS - I hope Brown Shirted Administration Thugs don't break into the Daily Campus over night and forcibly remove the dissidents from campus property. A simple logical, well reasoned and supported response should be sufficient. Last edited by Stallion on Thu Apr 22, 2010 4:07 pm, edited 4 times in total.

Re: Daily Campus strikes againNot all the boosters were aware of what was going on at the time. I was a member back then and always showed up at Moody on signing day and watched them write a kids name on a blackboard when one of the coaches called in and said they had his sig. on a LOI. Guess I was naive and clueless back then. I remember when we got Sean Stopperich (sp) away from the University of Pittsburgh and Fazio went ballistic. Loved it at the time but found out later that we had supposedly provided a job in Dallas for his dad.
When will I start feeling stimulated??

Re: Daily Campus strikes againFirst, SMU is a private institution owned by no one but the Board of Trustees. We don't own SMU. The Students don't own SMU. The Board of Trustees can make any decisions they choose to make regarding transparency or non-transparency of their activities. Much of what goes on is not something that should be published. Disciplinary actions, personnel decisions, are private, but others such as budgetary issues ought to be shared (and generally are shared). So, while Stallion may view a need for more transparency, its frankly none of our business. We can take the transparency or lack thereof into account when we are called upon to write a check to the University.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Daily Campus strikes againI don't remember taking a position on transparency. I took a position on the importance of Freedom of the Press and exchange of ideas. I certainly didn't agree with the article on the SMU Athletic Budget but I still have no problem with a university paper debating that issue.

Re: Daily Campus strikes again
For someone who is very interested in an exchange of ideas, you certainly do not seem to hesitate to belittle and insult people who make arguments you disagree with. The best atmosphere for an exchange of ideas is a congenial one. As someone posted recently, I appreciate a lot of the information you provide and agree with a lot of your opinions, I just wish you would be a little more civil if possible. To be fair, I know a lot of people take every opportunity to rip on you without provacation so it can be a two way street.
Re: Daily Campus strikes againMy only complaint is that this is very old news. Plus, it is still a problem the university can't seem put aside and move forward. The faculty and administration still have "knew jerk" reactions when it comes to athletics. I still don't beleive we have a level playing field in terms of athletes and academics.
Why not write about governance, transparancy and the Bush Library? or at least something that has occured during the lifetime of the editors.
Re: Daily Campus strikes again
No you won't. DC doesn't publish on Friday.
Re: Daily Campus strikes againThis article would be more palatable if it didn't have such obvious agenda. It's the same wanna-be journalist college student whining you see over and over in the DC, it's just taken a new form.
This is just a more intellectual form of "F the establishment man, yeah, whoa, F the man!" "I think Couchem is right."

Re: Daily Campus strikes again
The DC has spent the last 4 weeks investigating secrecy on campus. Addressed all of your list.
Re: Daily Campus strikes againonce again, whoopdefrickindo. Private college. Tell these folks to go get ahold of a damn dictionary (hell, Google it) and look up private. Appalled? c'mon

Re: Daily Campus strikes againComing next week - breaking news about the Spanish Inquisition!!
Seriously - this just comes off as immature. There is not a University in the country that has public board of trustee meetings. What is it they think should happen that is not happening now? Its a good recap of an archeological dig with limited, if any, relevance to today.
Re: Daily Campus strikes again
Yes, and while we're at it, let's re-hash whether Peruna or the Mustangs are the appropriate mascot. The horse that is that argument hasn't quite choked out its last breath.
Re: Daily Campus strikes again
Amen! Private university. To paraphrase the great Darren Hambrick: "What do private mean?" All you Freedom of Information hacks, go play where this applies - at one of your vaunted state institutions. By the way, anybody what a list of cars owned by UT football players?
Re: Daily Campus strikes again
I'd like to see a response from Stallion on this one. I really would.
