Good idea. Why don't you suggest it?

Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV Viewers
You don't have a say, and neither do the players or Jones. Peruna is the SCHOOL mascot. There are athletic teams other than the football team and the students are what make the school. Peruna is the mascot for all of them. Not supporting Jones' stupid horses does mean we don't like what he and his teams do on the field. It just means we support the traditions of our school. Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV Viewers
Earth to Treadway....I do have an opinion(aka "a say") and it's exactly the same opinion as June Jones...and btw we see who stands on the field with our mascot Peruna don't we? You've lost...whether you like it or not the full size horses are a part of this program...if June Jones and the players want them there...they will stay...no matter what you think of them....you and the other horse kooks can cry all you want....we live in reality...not message board fantasy where some pretend they are decision makers, player evaluaters, and recruiting experts. Big fricking deal the students that don't show up for games with or without Peruna have some vote. Yeah sure the student section will be full if Peruna is the only horse. Quit living in fantasy land pretending and lying that our mascot Peruna has been or ever will be replaced by the full size horses. Peruna is the real mascot and Peruna is my mascot. But as I have stated before I hope they add more and more horses just so I can laugh at the cry babies! BoooooWhooo Hawaii Bowl Be Damned! ![]() C-ya @ Milos!
Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV Viewers
Hey, there's the most rational argument for the horses I've ever seen.
Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV Viewers
Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV ViewersOK, I'm some what of a realist and obviously the geldings aren't going away anytime soon, but please...get rid of the damn cowboys. We are not Oklahoma State. If nothing else take the saddle off of one of the horses so it at least resembles a mustang, i.e., riderless, and throw an SMU blanket on its back. The rider on the other horse can lead the riderless horse around by its bridle similar to the way the Peruna handlers lead Peruna around.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV Viewers
Absolutely. No question. I've seen too many losses for too many years. I saw Peruna when I watched the Hawaii Bowl. But more importantly, I saw the Ponies kick the snot out of the Wolf Pack. If they want to roll out a goofier mascot every year and we get to win a bowl every year, bring on the salamanders and low-flying sea turtles.
Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV Viewers
Yeah, there are other teams, but as long as football wins — thereby pulling in money that helps defray the costs of operating the other sports — Coach Jones is going to get just about anything he wants. Traditions are great. Most of us (myself included) love them. But for the sake of perspective, separate the two for a minute: If SMU or the NCAA or someone else passed some new rule that said teams are not allowed to have mascots of any kind, would you still go to games — just to see the game itself? Of course. On the other hand, if the team was outlawed, would you go to the stadium to hear the band and watch a Shetland Pony do some wind sprints?
Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV ViewersJust wanted to inject, as some others said, if the team wants to do a "spirit walk" before games, it best start on or near The Boulevard.
It's just not practical to ask people to hike from The Boulevard to Moody Coliseum. Furthermore, I doubt the players have any sense of The Boulevard - the huge crowds, the communal feeling and the pro-SMU vibe. I've always been more inspired walking through The Boulevard than by any of our crowds at Ford Stadium. If the idea is to show the team there are a lot of people supporting them, they better find a way to get those buses closer to The Boulevard.
Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV Viewers
Just because those horses will appear on the field doesn't mean I haven't lost; there are lots of folks with me, including Orsini according to his letter. Regardless, while you may consider that I lost on this issue, I consider you a loser with your tedious blue fonted rants and name calling. Guess what, while the horses may get an expanded role, you and Jones are still in the minority regarding the horses. So far you have been unable to make a coherent argument and act like a spoiled child on this board. What is really sad is that you have made this an us against them issue. Calling me a cry baby proves nothing except that you have no class and are ready to lick the backside of June Jones if he asked you to. I like Jones, I want him to win every game he coaches, but that doesn't mean he is not misguided on this issue. SMU is a community and Peruna has represented that community for 70 odd years. A couple of horses that stood in the corner of the field for three games have a long way to go to become a tradition. Oh I forgot...you punctuate like a child also... Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV ViewersI fail to see why this discussion continues, given the following facts:
1) The horses arent going anywhere. 2) Peruna (Black Stallion Shetland Pony) is our mascot. 3) The extremists/crazies on both sides of this issue think this is of paramount importance to the athletic department and the university when it is not. Wishing something to be true does not make it so. 4) The SMU Student Senate has been pulling up worthless/weightless resolutions on a number of subjects before anyone on this board was born probably. 5) The recent comments by Coach Jones confirms numbers one and three above. So perhaps we all get over it. We are too small a family to fight over this, regardless of how ground shaking it appears to many on this board. Oh, I almost forgot 6) This board does NOT represent the view of the majority of the mustang faithful on every given issue. Silence on a web forum does not equal inactivity, especially with the average age of our donor base. _____________________________________

Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV ViewersJust because those horses will appear on the field doesn't mean I haven't lost;
there are lots of folks with me, including Orsini according to his letter. Uh? Treadway Steve Orsini supports the full size horses on the field or they would not be there. But I agree Treadway there are people on both sides of this subject as with all subjects...some like our uniforms some dont....some like the stripes some dont.....some like the horses or want to let JuneBeJune and some dont. Regardless, while you may consider that I lost on this issue, I consider you a loser with your tedious blue fonted rants and name calling. Oh yeah sure I am a "loser" because I use blue fonts....repeat after Treadway..."everybody must be the same...everybody must type in black"....ummm why's that Treadway?...Explain to me why black is a "better" color font?....Because "everybody does it that way".....yeah ok mr robot. Guess what, while the horses may get an expanded role, you and Jones are still in the minority regarding the horses. I dont believe that to be true. There is no scientific polling data to support that claim. I would think "most" people could actually care-less I would think most people will just let JuneBeJune as long as he keeps doing what he's doing! and ah yes...the students....I am sure you'll bring them up...yeah the students that dont show up no matter how many horses are at the game...... So far you have been unable to make a coherent argument and act like a spoiled child on this board. My argument is the June Jones/Steve Orsini argument....ya know the guys that get paid the big bucks to make these kind of decisions. I am not saying you have to agree with them, I am just saying I do. What is really sad is that you have made this an us against them issue. Oh yeah it's all my fault I just dont sit down and shut up and allow the cry babies to dominate this topic...I didnt imply our AD and Head Coach were lying in regard to the full size horses as some of the horse kooks did when this all started....why let just one side be heard? why let them rip and demean our athletic director that hired June Jones and rip and demean our head coach that just took SMU to the first bowl in decades.. life isnt a one way street where only one side gets to have an opinion.... Calling me a cry baby proves nothing except that you have no class and are ready to lick the backside of June Jones if he asked you to. LOL....so I call you a cry baby and then you proceed to call me an azzlicker and that is taking the "high road"? ![]() I like Jones, I want him to win every game he coaches, but that doesn't mean he is not misguided on this issue. Thats your opinion....I trust June Jones ....although not perfect....more often than not knows how to run a program...if June and the players want full size horses added to the gameday mix and they are turning this program around...I say....be my guest! SMU is a community and Peruna has represented that community for 70 odd years. I agree!....Peruna is my mascot...has been and will always be....quit mischaracterizing the full size horses role.....they have NEVER been presented as a replacement for Peruna A couple of horses that stood in the corner of the field for three games have a long way to go to become a tradition. On that Treadway we can agree....the full size horses obviously are not "a tradition" after less than a half a season.....and of course Peruna wasn't a "tradition" after a few games either...but Peruna is the SMU mascot...Peruna is the SMU tradition....Peruna is my mascot...and Peruna supporters shouldn't be sooooooo insecure about a couple of full size horses standing around in the endzone. C-ya @ Milos!
Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV ViewersIPP, the very first articles about the geldings all stated variations on the following:
"The new horses will be introduced against Navy on October 17, after which they could be named SMU's mascots." So, why haven't they been named SMU's mascots (even though the Hawaii press referred to them as our mascots over and over)? Because Dr. Turner doesn't like the horses, the students don't like them, etc. etc. etc.
Re: Jones to Student Senate: Horsies and TV ViewersCalallen....can you provide a URL source for any statement by the University or a high ranking University official that stated Peruna was being replaced by the full size horses?
"First and foremost, let me stress that Peruna, the black Shetland pony who made his first appearance at a campus pep rally in 1932, is and will continue to be our mascot," SMU Athletic Dirctor Steve Orsini - 10/12/09
Dr. Turner must be a great actor because he looks pretty happy in this picture. C-ya @ Milos!
