Can you imagine Rice or Houston coming up with 100 million requirements?

Rice has got a $4 billion endowment. The question is whether or not they would choose to spend the money that way, not whether they have the money.

No team will spend endowment money on any of this - it will have to be raised as new money - and Rice aint doing that in my opinion.

I think the guy going to four team divisions will be a headache for any conference looking at 16 teams. There will be screams if rivalries are lost in the shuffle.

As a Big Ten fan, this arrangement didn't look so bad:

WEST NORTH SOUTH EAST
Iowa Michigan Illinois Ohio St
Minnesota Michigan St Indiana Penn St
Missouri Northwestern Notre Dame Rutgers/Pitt
Nebraska Wisconsin Purdue Syracuse

If I were a university president with a lot of excess endowment money, I'd consider paying out a small percentage for BCS inclusion as an investment in the future of the university. Big Time Sports bring in money - it's probably a better investment than some of the things the guys running the endowment fund are investing in. Plus, it buys you free publicity which can reduce some of the operating expenses of the university.

Doesn't a large part of the Rice establishment (faculty, etc.) despise the athletics program and want to see it ground into dust?

Yes, but the question is where the Rice president and board of trustees stands. I think that the money they have recently put in to their stadium refurbishing and renovation of Autry/Tudor shows that the current Rice administration is athletics-friendly, but then I may have no clue what I'm talking about.

Besides, I started off the last post with "If I were a university president" making it a hypothetical (since I am not and probably never will be a university president, much less Pres. of Rice) and my post before was "Rice has got a $4 billion endowment. The question is whether or not they would choose to spend the money that way, not whether they have the money."

I don't think Rice is going to have to worry about this quandry.

While SEC coaches are speculating on expanding the conference, here is a new rumor and a bit off the wall:
