Here's another example of a poor evaluation IMO. Rumor has it that this kid would have loved to come to SMU. This goes back for quite sometime. However, flunked the Doh & Lutz evaluation test. SMU should have offered him last summer & they would have had him. I'm told he plays too much like Leslee Smith. BS !! Give me the most talented 6"7, 6"8 kids you can find. Talent finds its way to the court. It will be fun to see how he plays against a conference rival.
Houston Second Baptist's McLean to sign with Houston Houston Second Baptist's Mikhail McLean will sign with Houston on Friday, according to MyFoxHouston.com.
McLean, a 6-7, 205-pound forward who averaged 13.2 points and 4.4 rebounds this past season for Second Baptist, chose Houston over Boston College, Auburn, Arkansas, Cleveland State and Detroit.
"I am going to sign with UH Friday," McLean told MyFoxHouston.com. "I've already made up my mind and it's a huge relief to get it over with. I have a great feel for UH."
"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."

Here's the thing about evaluation, it's not done in a vacuum. We had 3 ships this cycle, 4 if we cleared one. Pats & Vilde were already locked in. The last ship was for a 3/4 more then a 2/3. The staff preferred Smith to McLean, which really isn't a stretch. Mclean's is offer list stunk, don't believe that BC, Auburn, Arkansas stuff for a minute. I like the kid, would have been a nice Mustang, but this isn't fantasy hoops. We only have so many ships, have certain needs, and make the best evaluation you can from there.
Did you want McLEan over Smith?
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones

I point this young man out because I don't look @ it as a McLean vs. Pats or Smith. When you recruit or even draft, its common knowledge that you take the best available player. A recruiting class of McLean, Pats, Smith, Vilde & or Purifoy would have been awesome. Scrambling around this late to fill a need usually doesn't work. I would have been fine with Walker, Pats, Clink, Barbee, etc, sharing the rock. Can't be any worse than Kileen & Walker handling the ball. Now that was some bad ballhandling. Watching 4 or 5 of the previously mentioned recruits perform may have been the key to attracting a TOP PG next season (see Anderson from North Crowley). TALENT over filling a need any day of the week !

I'm not sure McLean is really a best available type, though. his offer list ended up looking about like pigtails, and we actually needed a PG. Again, I like the kid and he's an incredibly nice individual, but I take Smith 10x out of 10 over Mclean. I wouldn't take Mclean over Pats or Vilde either. I have no idea about pigtails, but he rocks a ponytail, so that's gotta mean something Sorta forgot about Barbee, BTW. I sorta liked that kid this year, hopefully he can contribute some, now that McCoy is out.

I think he was probably the best available in Texas. Who knows, McCoy breaks the news a few weeks back & maybe McLean is a Mustang. Timing's everything.
