Re: Fire Doherty!I think the big question I have is how come it took this long in the recruiting process to find a pg like Ponytails that you could have signed months ago right here in Texas?
I look @ local & state kids like: Darius Gardner from Houston Yates who signs with SFA. Out recruited by SFA for the PG on the #1 HS team in the US. Darius Richardson- outstanding SG from the 5A State Championship team. He tore up star recruit Gotcher from Garland Lakeview in the championship game. Out recruited by UTA. Tre Lynch- outstanding PG from Lancaster- signed with Lamar. David Kates- Kimball Kevin WIlliams- de-comitted from Central Florida. Lamb Autry- PG from Collin County recently signed with Santa Clara. Teammate of Pats this past season. Dre Evans- Carter These are just a few examples of kids that would be perfect for this program. While Doh & Lutz are elephant hunting all over the country , these types of local/state kids slip right thru the cracks. Doh needs to step back & let Geary, Brown, & maybe Lutz handle the player evaluations & stay out of it. I thought the TK, Harp, Walker, & Spencer evaluations were bad until I saw last years recruit Luttman. You really have to question a coaches ability to judge talent when you look at someone like a Luttman & Clink from last years class. Do you know how many 5'11, 6'0 sg's there are in the DFW area? Everywhere. Plus, better than Clink. I just don't get it & based on the results, Doh doesn't either. I'm sure the excuse is they can't get into SMU because of grades, just like Fab. "We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
Re: Fire Doherty!
You're better then this post, cause frankly, half the kids you mention aren't good enough. Did Rice, Houston & UTEP miss on the kids you mention by not offering? How are they perfect for SMU, if they have about the same offers or worse, then a kid like ponytail? At that point, isn't it preference? Did we miss on Nick Hinton and Reggie Sonnier bc we didn't offer, and they only got recruited at a lower level? Should we recruit all low majors b/c they may slip away? Both Brown & Doh looked at Kevin Williams right before ponytail. They didn't love him last summer and they didn't love him two weeks ago. Doh went from there to watch ponytail, whom he loved. Lutz sorta liked Williams, but not as a no brainer. Anyway, you just focused on a ton of kids that according to you, everyone missed on, not just SMU. Many don't have offers now. How about we get upset about not getting high end kids that make sense for a CUSA program, not gripe about crappy locals that never even got mid major sniffs from anyone, some not even low major. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Fire Doherty! You could make the argument that Hinton & Sonnier are going to schools with better basketball programs. The schools you mention all have better programs than SMU. SMU is elephant hunting all over the country. Tre Lynch from Lancaster would have been a great choice for PG.
Again, they recruit the wrong kids. Darius Richardson was a great pickup for UTA. Those programs did a great job of identifying kids & jumping on them EARLY ! As we see annually, you can't wait till the last minute. You end up with Cam Spencer, Luttman's, Clinks. We'll soon find out about Ponytails. On a side note, would love to see Doh's expense reimbursement forms. He expenses must be outrageous traveling all over the country like he does. I got a recommendation for him that would save him time & the university $$$. Get your butt over to Plano West & offer their center Grosselle before its too late. Another perfect example of not offering the right type of recruit. After that, get in your Sewell Lexus & drive 10 minutes over to Frisco & offer Ben Dillard. 5 minutes away from their is your PG of the future, Austin Chatman over @ the Colony. That same day, stop of @ Kimball, Duncanville, Seagoville & Garland Lakeview. Simple plan. Recruit from the inside out. Not much bang for all the bucks thats being spent on expenses/ recruiting. Re: Fire Doherty! The fact remains that after 4 years pony nation should have 0 faith in Doherty as a recruiter, coach, or "CEO"...this is just the latest example of why SMU bball is in shambles. If year after year you can't make sound recruiting decisions then you can't win basketball games, the vicious cycle under Doherty continues and his ineptitude has become exhausting.
Re: Fire Doherty!
shouldve gone to Rice.
Re: Fire Doherty!Let's see how it works out. If we don't have a winning record next year it's time to hire another coach.
Re: Fire Doherty!
What's funny about the hate, is that even w/the pigtail debacle, it's still a pretty good class. If Pigtails can play, all the better. I agree though, we could use some local flavor. Groselle offer is LONG overdue. I think Dillard has a verbal offer. Unless we get into another last second PG thing in '11, I'm not thinking this staff is loving Chatman. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. Re: Fire Doherty! If you sport a pigtail, you have to be able to play.
Re: Fire Doherty!
lol, no doubt. Kids has huge nards to sport something that ridiculous “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. Re: Fire Doherty!Tired of the statement that Doh has had 4 years of recruiting. That said, completely in agreement that this is the year it has to get done.
Re: Fire Doherty!I read the posts on all the blog lines for weeks now and am so tired of reading about all this Basketball drivel so far from the season. Lets just see what happens this next season..this is the one that will make Doh, or cook him.
His recruiting hasn't been the best at all, especially when you consider thats one of the main reasons he was brought here, for his recruiting skills. The facilities are now major league and the players don't have to juggle the facilities with the girls Bbball team AND the girls volleyball teams anymore. Special admissions are now much easier to get in as opposed to previous years, etc. yadda yadda yadda.... So I have to ask, why can't Doh get the recruits and Rhonda Rompola can? She has two Duncanville girls on the squad next year and she is always competitive, makes the post season almost every year and if she hadn't had several major injuries this year, she would have had them dancing in the NCAA's. She doesn't have to rush out at the last minute for PG's and she has her recruiting classes set far in advance it seems. She has the same entrance requirements and issues that the boys do.....and she recruits from the area, for the most part. Her budget must be in much better order than the mens travel and recruiting budget. Oh I know all the mens shoe deals and all those shady AAU coaches are all out there ( the girls coaches are tough also) but still makes one wonder.... Lets just see what happens this year with Doh's squad and if it doesnt turn out well, then the pressure will cook his goose.
Re: Fire Doherty!
You can't compare a revenue sport w/girls hoops. The barriers of entry are completely different, and depth is a joke as compared to the men's game. Not defending Doh, but recruiting in the two sports is polar opposite. We went through this process w/my sister, at the highest level, and it couldn't be any more different then men's recruiting. That said, I really don't care anymore, as I just want Doh to sign ballers and a few locals. Pigtails depresses me “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Fire Doherty!maybe we can sway Holyfield and Fields to come hoop.
Re: Fire Doherty!
I think the biggest thing we all tend to overlook when discussing recruiting, especially on the local level, is the product being sold. As you mentioned, Rhonda can go into a recruit's house and not only sell the chance to play in front of family & friends, but also the opportunity to compete year in and year out for the conference championship & appearances in the tourney. If Doh had succeeded and this team was competitive, which meant a little relevancy, and SMU being a sexy name in college basketball, then recruiting locally wouldn't be nearly as difficult. Winning & being a household name would trump any of those other excuses we throw out like the Tubbs debacle, the lack of relationships with AAU coaches, etc. If SMU was showing up on SportsCenter regularly (or even the local news), then plenty of talented kids would love to stay close to home and play for a legit program. Bottom line is this program is a joke right now and if kids want to stay close to home they're better off playing at North Texas or UTA. You can't fault the local players or coaches for steering away from the men's program.
Re: Fire Doherty!Of course Doherty faced an uphill battle and it wasn't going to be easy but he was hired to turn things around and do his JOB. He is paid very handsomely to recruit and win games and he has failed on both levels. June Jones faced an uphill battle as well yet he is thriving. I know, I know some of you don't want to compare basketball to football but the fact is one man is thriving in his job and has reached cult-hero status and one is failing miserably and has incurred the wrath of pony nation. Everything from his 'hey blue chip guy, sign here' early days to his latest flops reveal that he just isn't cut out for this job...without ND or UNC on his polo he is nothing. When you are 30 games under .500 over 4 years in a poor conference with a softer non-conference schedule its time for a change. His "big name" luster is long gone and the longer he sticks around the more we have to deal with recruiting flops like this and, as a result, more losing seasons with a poor product on the floor.
