Paul McCoy is gone!Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Paul McCoy is gone!I'm sorry, losing the best recruit you've had in 4 years and the best player on the court during the 09 season has to be considered a disaster. McCoy averaged 34 minutes, 13.5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1.6 steals, and shot 36% from 3 as a freshman...he was the one ray of hope for the future of our bball program and now he is gone. His injury was a shame but as for charges that McCoy didn't improve as a player at SMU, to that I say: shocking! Not one player I've seen come through has improved under Doh. Now 3 of the 4 best players from this past years team are gone and Doh enters year 5 with a ton of questions and very few answers. Not what anyone was expecting from our $2 mil and 4 year investment thus far in our "big name" coach...simply dumbfounding. But I applaud McCoy for finally achieving what pony nation cannot: escaping the Doh regime
Re: Paul McCoy is gone!Wish Paul the best in his recovery and hopefully he will find a future opportunity to play.
Must disagree on the assertion that no player has improved under Doh. Think a number of players improved, Williams, Haynes and Otis were all better last year. Previously, Ofoegbu, Killen and Ritter all improved significantly. Again, willing to see how it plays out next year before joining the lynch mob.
Re: Paul McCoy is gone!
Paul McCoy was nowhere close to one of the 4 best players on last year's team. Worst FG%, 3p%, and most TOs of any of the 10 players that averaged 6 minutes per game. In order to suffer no loss from last year's team, we need a guard that can do as well as 7.4ppg, 2.5 assits, 2.7 TOs, 36%FG, 23%3pt. That won't be hard to replace. If we were losing Freshman year McCoy that would be a crushing blow. Which is EXACTLY what happened last season.
Re: Paul McCoy is gone!McCoy was #2 in minutes per game, #3 in rebounds per game (as a guard mind you), #2 in assists per game, #1 in steals per game, #5 in points per game (.2 behind scorer #4). Sure he had a down year with his shooting percentages but unless you don't value minutes, rebounds, assists, steals and points then you underestimate the wide ranging impact he had on the court...on both sides of the ball. Even losing McCoy in a down year compared to his freshman season is losing a starter and top 4 player...as well as someone that was a marquee recruit for Doherty, an all important point guard, and someone that was integral in the future of SMU bball. That is all gone now and to try to spin it as a positive or to say its not a major blow is foolhardy.
Re: Paul McCoy is gone! The whole scenario is just plain too bad. But, he didn't want to be at SMU last year and his play reflected that. All things considered it is a better day for both sides. Not that it is ideal(how it all has come about) but given the current situation regarding chemistry, incoming class, outgoing class, relationships, etc....wish him well and get a move on.
Re: Paul McCoy is gone!Has F. Harris already signed with Depaul? Could we possibly open that discussion with him again? Am I missing something here?
Re: Paul McCoy is gone!
We didn't miss McCoy at all when he went down. Just like we didn't miss Faye when he was out. McCoy was never going to be our primary ballhandler, freaks out when pressured, and has no jumper. Basically, a tiny combo w/o the ability to knock down open looks. He's a very good rebounder for the position, and anticipates well which helps his steals numbers. Combo's and shooting guards that can't shoot & pass, really don't thrive in the modified princeton. Also, he wanted to rehab in Portland w/his girlfriend, after leaving Dallas last summer and not playing. He even admitted his lack of reps killed his season early. Now, he wants to rehab in Portland while living w/his girl or whatever. Screw that. A junior Clink & Pats easily cover what we lost in McCoy. Morale went up w/that loss, even if we lost a capable player when focused. problem is, there's a lot going on in pauls head, and he's nearly impossible to focus. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Paul McCoy is gone! Its bad news only in that we have lost some much needed depth - number 4 player on the team? I dont think he was even in the top 8.
That said - not sure who is the guy at point next year - but this did not change that question. It wasnt mccoy anyway.
Re: Paul McCoy is gone!Do we know where he's transferring to yet?

Re: Paul McCoy is gone!
I know he put feelers out to Maryland, since that's where his GF plays. They said, umm call the WCC “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. Re: Paul McCoy is gone!
Any chance he goes to Mason and the PG we were after that committed to them decides to come here?
Re: Paul McCoy is gone!
Bryon Allen is a better prospect then McCoy, if only b/c he has a much higher ceiling. Mason wouldn't want McCoy if that were the cost. Right now, we don't have a scholarship. Since football lost the appeal on those 6 kids they tried to run, getting rid of scholarship athletes isn't quite as en vogue around the Hilltop. Simply, the school won't allow it right now. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. Re: Paul McCoy is gone!
You are right, we didn't miss him at all, after he went down we only won 2 games against teams not named Tulane or Rice...we thrived!! And if McCoy sucks so bad and can't handle the ball, freaks out, and has no jumper...then what does that say about Doh's recruiting ability if that is his marquee recruit after 4 years?!? And if he is the type of player that can't thrive in the modified princeton as you claim then why after his stellar freshman campaign did Doh institute a system that his leading scorer and best player from the year before couldn't fit into?!? Sorry PonyDoh, you can't have it both ways...you only raised more doubts about Doh
Re: Paul McCoy is gone!Dia was a better recruit than McCoy.
Re: Paul McCoy is gone!
Are you beating the Doh drum again? Doh's responsible for the program being a pr mess, and not winning more games, but this thread is about McCoy leaving. Frankly, McCoy hurt us more then he helped us last year, and he was a primmadonna that couldn't get out of his own head. You want to hammer Doh, start w/JS replacing Dwill, not Pats & Clink eating McCoys minutes. We get it, you don't like Doh, bully for you. I'm not loving this tenure myself, but I understand why it needs tto go through next year. Now that it is, we're going to play w/what we got. Personally, I hope they step up as a team and smack someone in the mouth. However Doh plays out, it plays out. McCoy wasn't starting when he went out, and he has a serious rehab facing him. I'm ok w/replacing the kid in the rotation w/a shooter, who has 4 inches on McCoy or so. I wish Paul well, and the state of the program is on Doh. Paul is on Paul, though. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters.
