How many games will it take for you?Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower How many games will it take for you?For the sake of this one thread, let's all come to grips with the fact that Doherty will be SMU's head coach for the 2010-2011 season. So please let's save any discussion on whether he should or should not be. He will be, like it ot not.
How many wins, in your opinion, will it take for Doherty to be worth bringing back as head coach? Even if you think he should have been fired after this season, there must be some level of performance shown next year that would change your mind- even if an NCAA berth is your threshhold. Two things to consider before you state your expectation for next year. - This year we went 14-16 in the regular season, 7-9 in CUSA. 0-1 in CUSA Tourney. - Assume we will again play 30 regular season games. - Assume strength of schedule is same as this year (15 games against teams to played in a post season tournament- NCAA, NIT, or CBI) Based on those assumptions/facts, what results in the W-L column does SMU have to produce next season for you to be in favor of bringing back Doherty?
Re: How many games will it take for you? What about teams that played in the CIT (CI.com Tournament)?
I'll say 18. I reserve the right to change this based upon things that come up in the future, though.
Re: How many games will it take for you?18 is my absolute minimum

Re: How many games will it take for you?17 would probably get him saved but really need to see at least 18 wins to keep the wolves at bay.....

Re: How many games will it take for you?17, 18?
Cmon... 20 to save his job depending on the schedule...
Re: How many games will it take for you?Agreed on the #20. The non-conference schedule will be so charmin soft that I think it will mean little to win 10 games or so there and another 7 or 8 in CUSA like last year. My Doh stance is well documented so in order to believe we have turned the corner I will say 20 wins is my magic number, along with a win or more in the CUSA tourney.
Re: How many games will it take for you?Calallen, I missed So Miss in the CIT so we actually played 16 games against post season teams. Thanks for the heads up.
If SMU goes 17-13 regular season and wins at least 1 game in the CUSA Tourney, Doh will be back. 20-10 with over half of the teams on the schedule being post season bound teams would have to almost ensure being in postseason play ourselves. I would love for that to be the case.
Re: How many games will it take for you?We improved 5 games this year, so another 4 or 5 next, regardless of schedule, shows legit program improvement. At a school w/lukewarm tradition, at best, it's hard to fire a coach making those types of steps. That said, 18-20 wins isn't coming easy

Re: How many games will it take for you?Do we really think the schedule is going to be any better?
Re: How many games will it take for you?
I really have no idea what to expect in terms of scheduling. I was hoping the tourney expanded to 96, so we'd see an appreciable jump in RPI/scheduling. In that scenario, there is no excuse not to try & make the dance. In our current scenario, we're more scared to lose then put a resume together. I cringe when I hear people talk about replacing crappy low majors w/local low majors. How about we play some legit mids, and become a road warrior if need be “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. Re: How many games will it take for you?Our SOS last season was not bad at all. 129th. Ahead of Norwestern, Virginia Tech, Illinois St., VCU (132, 133, 135, 136). A few spots behind BYU, Gonzaga, St. Marys, and Oregon St. (116, 118, 120, 128).
Yes, having some of the cupcakes come through Moody really sucks but damn near every program does that. People on here make it out to be so terrible by focusing on the 6 god-awful cupcakes and ignoring the fact that over half our games were against post-season bound teams. If we swapped 2 of those cupcake games with 2 games from Texas Tech, Ok St., OU, type programs, I would be perfectly pleased with our schedule, considering the state of our hoops program.
Re: How many games will it take for you?
I didn't realize our SOS was that good, sorta surprised. I agree that people tend to focus on the cupcakes, as if that isn't the case nationwide. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. Re: How many games will it take for you?
It's not necessarily that we play them, it's that we lose to them. #NewLobCity
