that may be true-and I have no problem with post game celebrations which are part of the supporting the team. it is also true that SMU fans have endured 20 years of hell because of a large group of rogue SMU alumni -and I mean about a dozen -who were out of control in the 1980s. Do you know the real story about that period? Did you follow it close enough to see how these violations occurred. I could name a long list of SMU alumni who cozyied up to recruits and players and coaches and repeatedly ignored even direct orders from the university to have no further contact with players and coaches. We even had alumni recruiting and paying players the SMU coaching staff weren't even recruiting. I don't trust football and basketball fanatic alumni and especially SMU alumni to do what's best for the university. That distrust is based on bitter experience. Every school has rogue alumni and most serious recruiting violations result from alumni that get too close to the coaching staff and players.

I know the whole story about what happened and if you think that the fanatic alumni are solely responsible for the last 20 years of dissapointments, you are mistaken. I have had two children recently go through the recruiting process and I myself, albeit years ago, experienced recruiting. Don't fool yourself into thinking that alumni don't come into contact with prospective recruits. We all need to remember that "people" make up the university and getting to know those people is what makes this university something special. SMU has coaches and student-athletes that are truly good people...get to know some of these young men and women....you might be surprised at what you learn.

His grandmother (and formerly his grandfather Bill, an SMU letterman, now deceased) lives in my building. To say this is a bigtime football family is the understatement of the decade. It would be great to get another Weatherford to the Hilltop (this kid would be a third gen. Mustang). I know we could have recruited Joe Weatherford (who ended up going to UCF and then transferring), but the Bennett regime didn't express sufficient interest.

Been near fifty years ago but I met Billy Weatherford a time or two and he was a great kid. Had a nice HS career at Hillcrest, but my memory is that he was a practice player only at SMU. That is sports, of course - not every legacy make the team - but it might have had something to do with his sons playing ball elsewhere. I think the family was pretty straight arrow. I suspect also that if SMU had been able to build on what ended in 1986 rather than starting over then the current generation might have been more reasonable targets for the Ponies.

Having said all that, it would be great if another Weatherford suited up in red and blue.

Not true at all, expony. Doh's more than fair, even if he does tend more toward the glass is half full camp. There is no one, with the possible exception of Jon when he decides to crawl out from under his rock, who posts better basketball info on this board.

Saw Stephen Weatherford's grandmother yesterday. She said Stephen would like to come to SMU and the family would LOVE for Stephen to come to SMU. So while we wouldn't necessarily be the frontrunner, I think we would be in the mix if our coaches think there might be a good fit.

I'd take Weatherford over Preston based on what I've seen on video-both are listed with offers. Preston probably has more experience running June Jones' offense though. Preston has accuracy in the 5-15 yard range. But watch Weatherford throw the long ball-its pretty impressive. Weatherford appears taller and more athletic as well. Both come from great high school programs.

its the old BLM v. Padron question.... BLM = Bionic Arm. Padron = High Footbal IQ + short range accuracy. assuming whoever we get in the next class redshirts, I find it hard to believe their arm won't be SIGNIFICANTLY stronger between 5/26/2010 and 8/1/2012. edit and thats assuming that Padron is no longer starting and Kaiser hasnt panned out, so my money is that by 8/1/2013 his arm strength will be fine. Padron and JJ have both commented how much stronger is arm was this spring compared to the fall. alsoooo this offense is about getting the ball out quickly, not seeing who can throw it the farthest. I think its a safe bet that JJ would have a QB that can throw 5-15 accurately, and let his wr's make plays, then have a qb that can throw the ball 80 yards but throws more TDs for the other team then his own

10-yard passes thrown accurately enough to let the receiver to keep running will result in more big plays in JJ's offense than passes that are thrown 30+ yards in the air.

Caveat 2-if you can't stretch the field in the Run and Shoot to open up the intermediate routes then you probably are in trouble

As an aside, I was shocked how accurate Padron's long throws were against Nevada - really couldn't have been any more accurate. JJ will be the first one to say he wants to stretch the field vertically.

The only long throw I can think of that was off was the pass to Aldrick that required him to do some gymnastics to get to.
