I think judging a program on total wins does not truly reflect the progress a program is making. Progress is measured based on the quality of recruits, the staff's ability to consistently recruit quality kids , the staff's ability fill all position requirements and with depth, the staff's ability with Xs and Os, the staff's ability to coach under game conditions, the staff's ability to improve kids and coach them up, the staff's ability to command respect and inspire players to greater accomplishment. I do NOT see where Doh has accomplished very much, if anything, with regard to the coaching or staff measurements. I do not consider "cup cake" wins to be of much value measuring progress. I do consider progress in quality team losses wherein the team is competitive to the very end in close games and properly executes all aspects of the game plan. Progress can be also be judged in quality wins against most conference teams and quality non-conference games. Unfortunately, SMU has not been able to beat the non-conference "cup cakes" with any regularity and last season finally knocked off several of the conference weak teams. Problem last season, with the exception of the Memphis game, was that the team was simply not competitive in most aspects of the other conference games. At this time, I could not place a game value on what might be considered progress without a clear picture of the non-conference schedule and without knowning whether or not any of 2010 recruits actually show up on campus.

Did you watch any of last season? We went 7-9 in conference. 4 of the 9 losses were by 4 points or less to teams that won 20+ games each. Add in a 6 point loss at Houston (19 wins and NCAAs) and a 7 point loss to Tulsa (23 wins and post season) and you are looking at 3 games in conference that we weren't competitive. Those 3 games were against the top 3 teams in CUSA.

We should have a higher bar than simply being compeitive. We should expect to beat our conference mates more than they beat us. But, how in the heck was last season's team "simply not competitive in most aspects of the other conference games"??? That is flat out wrong and/or uninformed.

That's a very good post, Icon. If anything, that team was very competitive in it's losses, but was somewhat decisive in it's conference wins. As long as we shoot FTs late, teams don't exactly like coming from behind vs our tempo. We'll see how it shakes out this year, but if we get a few of those close games, this is an 18-20 win team. If not, we'll probably look like last year w/better ball movement and a worse finisher at point. What's encouraging to me is increased skill. We lost some quicks & athletes, but we've gained passers and shooters including the UNT kid. Top to bottom, what was the last SMU team we had, that had as many kids capable of dropping a 3 on you?

all the talk about Doherty not making it beyond next year may be moot. With 4 more ships to give next year, if Doh and his staff sign 4 new guys in the early period, my guess is he at least gets another year with that class to see what they can do. I think it takes another 10-20 type of season for Doherty to be run out of here.

I'm told we have 5 ships still for '11 and the big debate is how many frosh vs transfers. At least 3 frosh in the class, and I'd expect 3 to be done in the early period. Anyone who didn't take stock of how many ships Doh needs to fill this year, needs to. I doubt very seriously if they'd have brought him back to fill this class, if they didn't expect him to coach it for a minute.

This is why I hope whoever they hire after Doherty bombs next year, keeps continuity with the coaching staff or the '11 class could set this program back another 4-5 years.

I also hope Orsini has veto power on all offers for that class so Doh doesn't have a repeat of his previous 5-ship class. Does it seem insane to anyone else that we're letting this man run loose with another 5-ship class? You know what they say...Fool Me Once

What's going to happen to this board when Doh succeeds next year?

If succeeds means he takes the team to the tourney (even NIT), I will be ecstatic. I want him to succeed, he just hasn't done anything during his tenure that leads me to believe he will.

I like the guy and would love him to be sent upstairs to be an associate AD of fundraising or somesuch, just as long as he is not the coach of our basketball team.

Ok, I'll play.

NIT. What happens if this team continues to show improvement and makes the NIT?

NIT is political and we don't draw well enough to be a home game, so that's part of the selection process right there. Success is any record that merits consideration for post-season play

Better. Thank you.

What happens to this board when next year we reach a record that merits consideration for postseason play?
