I laugh that they keep it under wraps when the info is readily available via Google News

Basketball staff member is hired elsewhere‎
SMU Mustangs (subscription) - 2 hours ago
I have talked with sources in the Midwest and confirmed with sources in Dallas that SMU assistant Steve Lutz will be taking a similar role at Creighton ...

I know that Lutz is a huge loss but you can't blame Doh for not being able to keep his assistants from moving on to better programs. The blame should be on him for hiring the guys that can't move to better programs. Here's our assistant coach turnover during the Doh administration

Garland - Michigan State
Irvin - Southern Illinois
Farmer - Fired/Resigned (one of the two)
Barnes - Fired? or Retired? or Resigned?
Lutz - Creighton

So you've got 3 assistants that moved on to better programs and two that couldn't cut it at this program.

Creighton is a better program, but its still a mid major in Omaha, Nebraska. Are you telling me that in year 5 of the Doh makeover of SMU basketball that we can't be expected to fend of Creighton from stealing our assistants? Powerful statement. I'm sure somebody will tell us we did not want/need him anyway.

tend to agree w/ you there. It would be akin to losing a football assistant to, say, Tulsa. Although that's a different dynamic, with the relationship JJ has with his assistants.

What happened to the staff Doh brought with him from ND to UNC, which motivated him to can all of Dean's relics that stayed around for Guth?

Creighton over the last 15 years has been heads and shoulders better than SMU over the last 15 years. Creighton is one of the best mid-majors in the country (not quite on the level of Gonzaga and definitely not on Butler level, but still really good), they play in the MVC which is an excellent basketball league, they don't have a negative reputation in the recruiting world, etc. It's a big step up from SMU.

I'd be mad if he left for, say, Evansville, but Creighton is a nice gig and you can't blame Doh for not being able to keep Lutz from taking it.

More akin to losing a football assistant to BYU (and with our football team not going to a bowl game last year as well).

Provo:Omaha or Tulsa:Omaha?

Provo's actually a pretty nice place, IMO. And I just remembered I have to go to Omaha/Lincoln in a couple of weeks. I'd rather be going to Provo

Wojcik is at Tulsa, Quartlebaum is known as one of the top assistants in the country and was at St. John's last year, and MacKinnon just resigned under pressure from the Idaho Stampede (D-League) head coaching position.

Provo's more scenic than Omaha for sure, but in terms of program quality, Creighton basketball is up there with BYU football. Not the best mid-major but consistently good. Their coach just got hired at Oregon.

rationalize all you want, but the fact is that when a coach is 'the guy' and turning around a program, his key assistant shouldn't be jumping ship for Creighton at this point (year 5, in June no less). Dana Altman isn't even there anymore. And while you are so enamored with the MVC and Creighton, it wasn't that long ago that Dement has SMU on the brink of being a Creighton-level program. You act like Doh is the first guy that has ever had us sniffing .500.

Dement's last year + Tubbs' two years tore us down from "the brink of being a Creighton-level program" and took us to "the brink of being a NJIT-level program." We're starting to come out of it (we think, unless some of the decent games played last year were just aberrances).

As far as Doh goes, the guy has to win 18 games at the least next year for me to advocate bringing him back...I'm not convinced he's "the guy" but I understand why we need to stick with him for another year.

I sure as hell can blame him. If Doh won, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

If we won 20 games a year we still wouldn't be on Creighton's level.
