Realignment: I Think We Are Screwed

June Jones said today that Orsini couldn't make it to the Austin leg of the June In June trip due to "hot issues" in Dallas. A few people asked about realignment and Coach Jones has obviously been keeping up with every rumor and fact; he was apparently with Mack Brown (!) a few days ago and Brown said that Texas & Co. were "definitely going west (Pac-10) if someone else left the Big XII first (Nebraska)". The SMU athletic dept. has been thinking up different conference scenarios and how to get ahead in each.

I was wrong about there being no major realignment this year, but I still think we're in good hands. Turner is pretty much on board, our AD is working feverishly on something related to this realignment, and Coach Jones is confident/has connections.

We have a President on our side, a boatload of very rich alums, two NFL owners, June Jones. We are in Dallas with 80,000 seats in Arlington and 90,000 seats in Fair Park we can play games in against huge draws. We are obviously trying now.

If you want to get technical I think the number thrown around during the renovation was 92,000.

......? Maybe Jones is getting Brown to get us the inside track to hook up with the Big12 leftovers? Was there a coaching conference or something? Very odd.

Those were his exact words; he simply said that he "was with Mack Brown a few days ago". He didn't elaborate any further than that. He focused on the previous season, the newest recruits, conference realignment, next season, and the fact that he and Turner are disagreeing over some provisions of his 2-year extension. There's a behind-the-scenes dispute going on between the academics and athletics at SMU (due to funding I guess) and Turner's on the fence.

Joining the Big XII would be great for SMU if it keeps its AQ status after this ordeal.

What is the thinking regarding the MWC/BIg 12 leftovers going to 16? I realize some of the same schools were in the WAC 16 and hated it, but given that all the major conferences might go to 16, would they want to as well?

I think if the Big 12/MWC went to 16, we'd have a good shot of getting in that group.

MY GOD, if we screw this up AGAIN I'm done with SMU for good. It's not heartless to give up on a street bum who refuses to do anything better.

Jones didn't name any conference specifically, but mentioned that we were being proactive in this mess. He seemed to think that a playoff system is going to form after realignment, but what shocked me is that he seemed calm and collected while he said it. Whenever I hear about a possible 64-team playoff, there's a whole lot of doom and gloom from the non-AQ schools.

I think it has something to do with Jones' coaches/staff. He thinks that Turner needs to be ready if we suddenly need to cope with their demands; the example he gave was if some other school tried to grab members of our coaching staff after they saw the progress that SMU football has made under Jones.

I wouldn't worry about this. Coach Jones is committed to SMU and he's just trying to make sure that everyone else is as well. He's very, VERY, sure of his ability to turn SMU into a "#1 power" again.

Agreed, the bottom of the MWC is [Deleted] and doesn't deserve AQ status.

My only thought is, how does it work forming a new conference with basketball auto bid and would Big 12 still have an AQ spot? I haven't seen a definitive answer to these questions and my guess is this will dictate what the Big 12 leftovers and the MWC will do regarding merging, new conference creation or another scenario.

I think we can squeeze into a best of MWC, CUSA West, Big 12 leftover group.
