Iowa newspaper proposes SMU in a new-look Big 12

Just an idea, but a DesMoines Register blogger has SMU in a revamped Big 12 South:

Memphis (or Missouri, pending the Big Ten’s call)

I realize this is from an Iowa paper, but why is Iowa State automatically included in any proposed conference with the Big 12 leftovers?

They are in a small city in a small state that really only cares about Iowa. Couldn't and shouldn't they be left out of a new league, or at least be further down the list?

this is a great point. iowa state to me is further down the list then us by a long shot. we have so much for going for us(with the exception as you noted they are already in the big 12). we have better tradition, facilities, and team than they do.

This alignmentis not going to work and is total made up stuff and agree Rice over Tulsa is wrong, and what WILL happen with Rice anyway if the CUSA were to disband? They are just another small Private school that has a really small fan base that could be so exposed.
