Put us on probation? Hey, I hate Texas as much as the next guy, and more than most...

Even if Texas did blow the whistle (which, actually, I'm inclined to believe they did), no one is responsible for what happened to SMU but SMU.

While I agree that Texas is to blame for the demise of the SWC, I really see Missouri as the catalyst to this realignment and catalyst is the perfect word because in the end they will be the ones left behind.
Even today, Texas could hold the Big XII (the remaining 10 teams) together. But they won't. They again will selfishly look at the dollars they can get in their coffers and to hell with everyone else.
Why would they? Its a big business and UT is doing what they can to solidify their position going forward just as every school is, and its not selfish, but smart business planning. The ability to expand and get new market share and the potential to be involved in a super conference with maximum exposure from here in Texas all the way out to the whole western USA and starting at $20 million a year per team is not greedy at all, but prudent.
You are right. It is big business. That is the sad part of all of this. College football is not about tradition or rivalries, and it is not about encouraging participation or the quality of the game. Its about TV ratings, ticket sales, huge coaches salaries, and the preservation of recruiting advantaages for those big schools that can pay the big salaries. Its not, and probably never will be, about sportsmanship, competitiveness, or the guys who actually play the game. This is a system that fosters mismatches like UT/ New Mexico State. An example of a pure exhibition designed so UT can pad its record and so that NMSU can pad its pocket book. Home and away series? No thanks. UT, Penn State, Alabama, tec. need to play as many home games as possible so they will have a competitive advantgge and sell tickets to people who never saw the inside of a classroom.

Can we get the MWC to meet at an airport Hilton and kick out their week teams?

That being said, and this is actually kind of a question I would be interested to hear the answer to, what is Texas doing that SMU wouldn't do in the same position? Are we not also looking out for #1?

#1 for us just happens to have less of an impact on the football world.

I would say that is a fair assessment. The only other program (other than ND) who might be able to do what they are doing is probably Ohio St. Maybe Florida? And both of those schools already have pretty nice tv contracts locked up.

I don't fault them for doing what is best for them. I only question if the end result will actually be better for them. If they have to give up their network to join the Pac-10 anyway, why not give it up and keep the Big 12 together in the first place? Maybe they have numbers supporting a Pac-10 move would be better for them, but it sure feels like they just never thought anyone would actually bail on them.

But if the trail of damage turns out good for SMU, I don't really care what happens to anyone else! :D

Sorry Topper you are thinking 'old school'...traditions went the way of gold watches for 30 years of service to one employer. Its all moving fast and if you don't make dust, you just end up eating dust. Unfortunatly those UT/ NMSU works for both colleges and satifies both, for different reasons. But what about T & M now trying re-nig on the planned football series between them and us because we aren't just a NMSU anymore, but a real threat.
