The one time in our history we worked with the Dallas Cowboys we scored big. A lot of these kids never would have chosen SMU without Texas Stadium. Eric Dickerson would not have committed to SMU to play in cozy Ford Stadium. You guys can talk all you want about how cold the beer is and how pretty the girls are on the Boulevard. Top National Ranked Football recruits want to play in the spotlite and in a Big Time Stadium. When SMU brought football back to campus at a second class high school stadium after the Death Penalty, it was probably the clearest signal to recruits and the public that we no longer intended to compete. Then they made a second mistake and went back to the Cotton Bowl.

just think. We could have a baseball stadium, new pool and indoor facility where Ford now sits, and on gameday we could be playing at Mustang Stadium in Irving, what with the Cowboys out of the way.

We might be able to do something to earn our way into an MWC level league like Boise did but that ship isn't waiting 7 years to sail. We need to be on that ship before it gets BCS status or we ain't getting in and the opportunity ain't coming back. No, now is the time. It would be nice if we had 5 years of success to sell but we don't. the Admin waited too long to compete. We're gonna have to sell ourselves on location, resources, facilities, and competitive potential at this point. If that doesnt do it, we better hope like heck that the MWC does not get BCS access cuz it they do, and we are not with them, we have even a bigger problem than a few bowl wins will solve.

If you read the TCU board right now, they are thinking it is getting so bad over there that they may wind up in CUSA. They think BYU is leaving soon.

I remember just about filling Texas Stadium several times, and yes a number of big state schools help make it happen...but, other than getting beat, no one complained about being in Dallas, as opposed to Stillwater, Lubbock, Ft. Worth or Waco. Some of these schools should remember to schedule on the basis of where their fans would like to go, not how their fans filled 40-50% of the stadium.

Chip Brown was used. Even in retrospect, if the University of Texas, announced a meeting, that was all they announced, what the meeting was to be about, and speculation as to what was going to happen, was all Chip and his so-called inside source. He was even the source of the financial confusion that suggested Texas would be financially better off in the Pac 10--rediculous. Texas was never going to get an uneven split and rights to their own network--the numbers simply never added up. I found it odd that every major sporting news source, had no independent varification, but only Chip Brown at Orageblood/Rivals--in perticular, ESPN. An internet fan site vs. a real journalist source? If UT owed someone, it would have been a major network or newspaper, something that would help sway public opinion, not a fan site. The leaks were absolutely managed by UT.

Good points but I wasn't talking recruiting. I was talking attendance. Do you believe Texas Stadium and its environs was a better draw than a Ford Stadium with a completed horseshoe and the Boulevard would be?

vs Texas at Texas Stadium or vs the majority of opponents at Ford for which we draw 15k or fewer?

The question was this. If we had the Pony Express, and the consequent national ranking in a BCS conference, would more people have come to Texas Stadium or an on-campus, horsehoe-completed Ford Stadium that seated 45K. I contend we'd average more per game in Ford than Texas Stadium.

No question, fans would end up preferring Ford. recruits Texas Stadium (when the 'Boys played there). But, eventually a full, loud pro-SMU crowd coupled with the BLVD would an outstanding football evironment that would be highly attractive to both.

Texas Stadium was relatively new when we moved. If Jerry World was close to SMU or its fanbase-SMU would recruit better, win more and eventually have better crowds than SMU would if they had to recruit and play at Ford Stadium assuming we played in a premier Texas Conference. Fans wouldn't be as happy and the University would have drastically smaller sources of revenue which probably doesn't make financial sense with schools like Rice, Tulane, UTEP, Tulsa et al. . SMU probably couldn't afford Jerry World and his $150 Tickets-no telling what he would charge for rent. Recruiting wins ballgames. I think if you talked to June Jones he love to have Stadium expansion.
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
