Re: Mountain West: No more expansionOuch. That ain't good any way you cut it.
Re: Mountain West: No more expansionTheir reason is because they don't want to remake their schedule? Weak.
Can't believe they would actually give up BCS status for the next 5 years and wait for the Big Xii-2 to implode. If they need a bump next year, they will add more.
Re: Mountain West: No more expansion
I agree with your point, but maybe they're thinking adding teams now wont change their status anytime soon anyway. So why not wait another year or two.
Re: Mountain West: No more expansionWhat is the purpose of calling a press conference to say you are not going to do anything? Wouldn't just not doing anything accomplish the same thing?

Cuts down on the phone calls and e-mails and frees up your face book. ![]() SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Re: Mountain West: No more expansion
If you look at the rules to become an AQ conference, you would have expected the MWC to *not* expand until 2012 at the earliest. Their #1 priority has been to get AQ status, and they pass 2 of the 3 requirements and are 7th in the 3rd requirement (need to be in the top 6 for automatic AQ status). If things stay as they are, they will possibly pass all 3 requirements or they will be close enough go through the appeal process to get it. Why wouldn't the MWC want to expand further? Teams with 9 teams or less get a 25% bonus to their BCS points, teams with 10 teams get a 12.5% bonus, and teams with 12 or more teams get no bonus. If the MWC added a team, their BCS AQ chances would drop...even if that team was Alabama or Texas! Even without the 25% bonus consideration, there are very few teams that would help their average...with the loss of the 25% bonus, NO team would help them. It is actually *good* for SMU for the MWC to not expand now. Boise State was added for the current BCS evaluation period--2008/2009/2010/2011--to help the MWC get AQ status. But the new BCS evaluation period starts this year and runs from 2010/2011/2012/2013. If the MWC was adding teams now, they would have to go by the current evaluation period...and SMU would *not* be included in the candidates because of their computer ranking in 2008 (only Houston, Nevada, and Fresno State are above the MWC average, but they don't overcome the 25% bonus). However, if the MWC waits a few years before expanding, the 2010/2011 years will determine who is a good candidate for expansion and SMU has a chance then.
