Thursday notes

Postby PonyPride » Thu Jun 17, 2010 10:47 pm

The SMU Mustangs went through a modified optional conditioning workout Thursday. After lifting, the they were able to forego the heat by running up and down the stairs from the basement to the third floor of the Loyd All-Sports Center. It was a lot cooler than it will be Sept. 5 in Lubbock when the Ponies open the season at 2:30 p.m. at Texas Tech, but the players still worked up a good sweat. Watching players run stairs is about as exciting as watching paint dry, so only a couple of notes today:

• Aaron "Spike" Davis finished the spring workouts as the first-team nose tackle, despite weighing in then at 243 pounds. A couple of months later, he is up to 254 pounds, and says he plans to be up to somewhere around 260 when preseason workouts start in August. Davis said he is among several players who are eating better, and that he has increased his work in the weight room. Knowing how easy it is to run off pounds in the August heat, Davis said he is trying to add most of his new bulk in his legs, where he'll hopefully be able to maintain most of his size in the heat.

• Another freshman arrived Thursday: hours after arriving in Dallas, offensive tackle Darryl Jackson made the rounds of the Loyd All-Sports Center. He said he has 299 pounds draped over his 6-foot-7 frame, supported by size 16 feet. Jackson is not allowed to work out with the team until he takes his physical next week, but went for a run on his own.

Both very encouraging.
Can't wait to see Jackson suit up.

Remember in the early 1990s when we'd sign offensive tackles who were 6-1 and 250 (maybe) and we'd hope they grew into legitimate D-I sized OTs?
My, how times have changed.
Move in with Coach Mel, Darryl. You can become an absolute beast.

Good to see Spike getting bigger. Whether he ends up starting or not, he'll get considering playing time. Keep lifting and eating

Lines looking pretty thin with Josh out. Makes this even better news.
