Have you ever played a football game in the heat? Hot is hot. 3 hours will not be determined by color. If I am going to spend days in the desert I will put on my white but do not show your ignorance by thinking a uniform color would be the difference in a football game. Aside from that, my original comment was directed to a poster with whom I have a continuing running joke about uniform colors, but I do appreciate your concern about my intelligence. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand

Easy fix. Just watch it on TV. And the heat and time of day might dictate some cooler clothing worn by Coeds. Now that might be a bonus one can enjoy.

Heat absorbing dark colors are not problematic? I treasure your explanation that 'hot is hot.' Very true, but scientists have just recently discovered that there are varying degrees of heat. To suggest that the color of ones clothing is significant in every activity but football is laughable. Football offers no special protection against the heat. To be subject to the heat in a way that your opponent is not is a legal difference. Thus, a team with lighter uniforms possesses an advantage in regards to their exposure to the heat. Re: WSU gameThe good news is that the visiting team's bench will be in the sun for the whole game (assuming no clouds or rain) and if they don't bring equipment such as fans to cool them down they will be cooking. ![]() SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I just love esoteric theory debates. If we are basing our opinions on science, then it would be to our advantage to wear as dark as possible uniforms because we want things to be hotter. Why you ask? Simple, it will improve oxygen delivery to the muscles. Energy for muscular contraction is obtained predominately by oxidation of fuel performed in the mitochondria. As energy requirements increase, so too does the production of fuel (primarily as high energy phosphate bonds in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)). The formation of ATP is more efficient with aerobic metabolism (which needs the presence of oxygen). As a side note, once the capacity for aerobic metabolism is maxed, then an additional mechanism kicks in to supply fuel. This is anaerobic metabolism. The delivery of oxygen during high energy requirements is based on heart rate and saturation of erythrocytes (red blood cells) with oxygen. For normal persons, this saturation is essentially 100%. There are certain conditions which lower the affinity of red blood cells for oxygen. In these conditions, red blood cells will more easily dissociate oxygen. One of these certain conditions is increased temperature. It is important that oxygen dissociate with red blood cells so that other cells (like muscle) can use the oxygen. So when our kids are using a lot of muscles and requiring a lot of energy, the hotter we can make the uniform, the better the delivery of oxygen so needed for efficient ATP production.
