CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT and SMU

Postby SMUBaller » Tue Jun 29, 2010 4:03 pm

With the recent post quoting the Rice President that there will be more conference shuffling, any rumors or thoughts on the impacts effecting Conf USA and more importantly SMU ?

I haven't heard anyone else speculate about additional conference realignment this year. Based on the statements coming out of the major conferences, I don't see anything major happening. Fall practice is only 30 days away and the season starts in 60 days. I think we're done until next year at the earliest.

I fully expect SMU, Houston, and one other to be invited to the MWC next summer. This will allow the conference enough time to gain a bonus in the BCS calculations for being a smaller conference, while providing a lucrative conference championship game after that status is attained.

You really see that Samaurai? I hope you're right but I'm a bit on the negative side right now.

I'm not feeling negative. Every day above ground is better than a day six feet below it. We haven't gone to Super Conferences, CUSA hasn't lost anyone, TCU is still in a non-AQ conference, and about 64 teams haven't left the NCAA sitting cushy in massive, powerful conferences.

If we accept the premise that the current MWC will gain BCS status, and we accept (as I do) that SMU and Houston are the best choices to add to MWC based on who is available, the question become "why go to 12?"

If the MWC is BCS, the only reason to add is money. Does a championship game + SMU & Houston media adds bring more than splitting the money more ways?

I'd say that SMU and Houston bring pretty much nothing as far as media/TV goes (especially SMU), so basically is a championship game worth going from 10 splits to 12?

I have no doubt that, barring action from the existing BCS conferences, this will be the case.

Big 12 expansion may not happen this year, but it is very possible that it may happen within the next ten. In order to preserve its standing, the MWC should expand now to hinder the blow of having its schools raided in the future.

I don't see where the Big XII can go except after Arkansas and LSU for additional bucks and exposure and those seem unlikely to leave the SEC. The MWC, even with TCU, has very little exposure in Texas and would benefit in recruiting and exposure with SMU and Houston and maybe more bucks for their network, especially if they are granted BCS Status and more Bowl Games in Texas, (Dallas, Houston?). Our job is moving onward and upward and winning the CUSA meanwhile.

Tuberville said today, that he didn't see the big 12 lasting very long with the current pay strcture and some schools un-willingness to compete....

Big 12 will be done next summer...
