academic casualtiesModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower academic casualtiesI don't see any recent threads...how bad is it now? do we have a list?
Re: academic casualtiesi will tell you there is a bunch of anger out there...i have received two emails, one a copy of a very personal email to dr. turner, worrying that jones might bolt at the end of this season,if the administration did not keep its word...and the other was about a full page ad to go in the dmn directly attacking turner ..saying basically we dont want to go back to the pre jones days...i gather thre has been some dialog with turner re this ad and he has said he mis understood the level of anger that has been generated...there guys are part of the gray hair suite crowd...
Re: academic casualtiesthis whole thing has me sick. i wonder if there's a bit of resentment by the faculty/academia towards the football program and all the positive attention their getting and that's why their doing this to the football recruits.
what's most disgusting about that if it's true is those folks are so short sighted that they don't realize that because of our success on the field, applications are up over 30% this spring. meaning that we can select a higher caliber of 'general' student. there MUST be some leniency towards student athletes. heck, we've got an undergrad enrollment pushing 8000, so what if 1% (85 football players) are academically lower rated than the other 99%? a higher caliber student in the 'other 99' will bring up that 1% higher than if everything remained status quo. Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
Re: academic casualtiesFun is spelled WIN - don't mess with the WINe and cheese crowd
Re: academic casualties
My sentiments exactly...also very cs to wait until the last week to tell the kids.
Re: academic casualties
yeah, and to do it the friday before a 3 day weekend. friday is always when bad news is delivered so it can be swept under the rug. no one is even in town, reading the news, or on the interwebs (except a few of us). this WILL NOT be brushed off. please take the time to forward the DMN link to everyone in your contact list that went to SMU. we have to make sure this survives the holiday. Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
Re: academic casualtiesI see all the outrage posted on here, but can someone step away from the ledge and give me the facts? I know 4-6 guys aren't eligible, but only Hall made it through the Clearinghouse and wasn't admitted, correct? So why is JJ now contemplating leaving, and is that fact or someone knee-jerking? Also, why would they let in Shawnbrey last year ( and weren't there questionable true frosh ), and then all the sudden do a 180?
I'm not saying you guys are wrong, I just want a coherent post with just the facts. #NewLobCity
Re: academic casualties
The only true concern should come from the rejection of Hall. The others were expected casualties. However, even one recruit being held back unnecessarily should be cause for concern. If academics are the only factor, this would be extremely inconsistent. Did not the basketball team recruit a player who had not even graduated high school but had instead received a GED? Re: academic casualtiesMy understanding has been the academic adjustments were never 100% where they need to be.
No news to the powers that be (not that they all like it) -- so I don't see how Jones bails -- but coming off a bowl win the Indians might get restless to force more change Last edited by SMU89 on Sat Jul 03, 2010 10:10 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: academic casualties
Turner gave the faculty no voice in the construction of the Bush library, but gives them power over that of athletic admissions? Turner only seems to use the power he has when it does not involve improved athletics. Far East Conference

Re: academic casualties
It is actually relevant. In one instance Turner rejects any notion of faculty power, while in the other he bows to it. Both involve the power of SMU's president. Turner would appear to have a removable spine, present for all matters not related to athletics. Last edited by Samurai Stang on Sat Jul 03, 2010 11:22 pm, edited 4 times in total.

Re: academic casualties
The reason given may not be the underlying cause he was not admitted, this needs to be checked out on the qt before any action is taken, if the committee did find a legitimate underlying cause then thanks should be given and move on, if no logical reason can be give stick it to them. Re: academic casualtiesSo you are telling me our great coaching staff with all the years of NFL and college experience can't find around 20-25 student athletes a year who can be admitted to SMU, due the coursework and graduate, and still be productive football players? Hogwash! They should easily find more than enough recruits. They are just looking in the wrong places. There are many high schools in Texas which are producing great student athletes at the college level. Are our coaches working those schools or are they getting enamored with 40 times in east texas and louisiana and not doing "their" homework on the academic and background checks of the individual player/recruits? As I have said before, junior colleges will provide another opportunity for those who don't qualify. On the other hand, it is a sad commentary on our public school system. A great opportunity wasted.
Re: academic casualties
Sure they can. But they are being recruited to better programs. Top athletics and top academics is a TOP recruit. We have to try to find guys that can compete athletically as the primary attribute! If you can't handle that, go hang out with your buddy Pye in DII. "I think Couchem is right."
