I am curious as to whether admissions denied him fore purely academic reasons. If all academic requirements were met, then this is indeed troubling.

per DMN...

"Admissions decisions are confidential under university policy," SMU athletic director Steve Orsini said in a statement. "Under SMU admissions procedures, once a student's application file is complete, it is submitted to the admissions committee. Admissions decisions or any appeals are then acted upon in a timely manner."

basically, they're not saying. that's a big part of the concern.

Are any posters capable of performing an illegal background check so that we might learn if this was an entirely academic issue?

I"ve searched a legal background check and found nothing on the internet. In fact, its ironic he seems to have won one of the highest honors given Brenham athletes for academic good standing, leadership and athletic performance. Hard to figure this one out.

I've known Jeremy Hall my entire life. Kid is one of the most ridiculous talented boys on earth. Could have gone to any school he wanted to probably. In fact Jeremy told me he was getting letter from Oregon before he even committed to smu. He probably could have played any sport he wanted to at the collegiate level. From what I know he's one of the nicest kids you'll ever meet. Never seen him around any trouble, or even heard of him getting in trouble.

My understanding is they based their decision on a low SAT score and that's all. He's NCAA eligible, so he should be SMU eligible - this is ridiculous.

I've known Jeremy since I coached him in Little League. He's an incredible athlete and an excellent young man. He committed to SMU last summer and has told all other schools that he's not interested. For SMU to renege on its commitment for no good reason is pathetic.

Other schools are going to use this against SMU in recruiting and I know at least one high school coach (with several former athletes in the NFL and in D1 schools) who probably won't let SMU on their campus. I doubt Jones is going to stay after this stupidity, either

I enjoyed one good season and a bowl win - too bad President Turner didn't.

Agreed. It was my understanding that June Jones would not be implementing the Rice model.

I do not share your connection to Jeremy Hall, but I do share your frustration.

dead-on first post.

"If a player meets NCAA requirements, we can get him into SMU"
-Steve Orsini, relating what he was told by President Turner, at JJ's hiring press conference

Time to unleash some 'unbridled' comments to Dr Turner's inbox. We've been lied to.

Don't panic. Wait for confirmation of facts before you charge after Orsini, Turner and the Board. Don't back Jones into a corner, he has a good working understanding with the administration, the Board, and donors, wait until he comments on the subject.

for one, i see a way to turn this around...if turner were to override the committee,it would get him a few points, get hall into school ...of course,he could then claim that he is fully committed to maintaining a course of improvement...but he needs to act quickly, before the ad appears on wednesday.after that he would lose his lofty throne...happy 4th.

Let's tap the brakes a little here. While we can keep debating about the admissions issue, let's not start another rumor. June's staying. Saw this statement from Coach over on PonyStampede:

"As we prepare for fall practice, I’m very excited about the direction of the program. We have a talented group returning and a great group of newcomers joining the team. We snapped a 25-year bowl drought last season and our goal this year is a Conference USA title – one that I hope will be the first of many. As I stated when I received my contract extension in November, I’m looking forward to many more years and championship seasons on the Hilltop and I’m glad to be part of the ‘Mustang Nation.’” – June Jones

Josh says it was sent to him yesterday...

I know these "grey beards", they have every right to be concerned and upset with the administration. These are people that have previously served SMU in numerous capacities. They know that SMU is about to be black-balled by every Texas high school coach because the ruling was unfair and untimely. They do kow what transpired from our coaches and they are livid.

Turner has no clue how many people are upset with his administration.

He was taking his traditional condecending attitude toward the problem, when a group visited with him and informed him that they were sponsoring a full-page article in the DMN, that would be extremely unflattering to him and SMU--broken promises, no leadership, and the rift in the university community, including an elitist attitude bespeaking of racism, etc.

I can assure you that our program is in serious trouble and that the coaches will not stay. It is one thing to declare an athlete the doesn't attend class or do the work inelgible, quite another to arbitrarily raise the bar on admission the day before the student is to arrive! This boy gave us his commitment a year ago, his bags were packed and he fulfilled the NCAA requirements.

Get mad, get real mad and do something about it or you can kiss the fan sites goodbye along with SMU athletics and Turner's plan to double our endowment.

I urge you to please e-mail Turner, be polite, but firm in your displeasure. Please beleive me this is serious. I been out of the country and my e-mail is packed with messages from people that are close to the situation. These are responsible business leaders. I know this, if they are mad, we should be mad.

another player was also sent packing last week, and has been admitted to a bcs school. Turner lied to orsini and june jones. Turner does have final say in these matters, he chose to screw everyone involved. Stay tuned, this could get very ugly.
