Agree Bus as these so-called eggheads are jealous of the type of notoriety that these student/athletes get from the public. They made their point, now do the right thing if thats allowing them in, or not.

Bus, we don't have the academic help (tuitors and academic administrators) other schools have. Turner doesn't believe that athletes should be helped beyond the level of the average student. Of course, the average student doesn't put 4 hours a day into a sport. Just compare the help our athletes get compared to A&M. Last week I thought that was our battle--academic support. But this weekends events, are just wrong. You can't change the rules midstream, you can't make your wishes or rules known at the last minute and you can't make the young athlete suffer for our inability to get our act together.

Let's say for example that a player appears with an SAT verbal score of 250 (minimum 200). That means that the student probably has issues in reading comprehension and grammar. Will that student succeed out of the chute at SMU or are we talking about a student that will need extensive tutoring and 12 hours per day of studying to get up to speed? Add to that, the kid is a freshman, and there are things like girlfriends that take some time. There are kids that will overcome those problems and succeed, but more likely they will get frustrated and shut down. Now realistically, do you want to use up a scholarship on a freshman who likely will not make it through, and hurt your APR score which might trigger scholarship penalties in the future. Its not an easy question and the NCAA clearinghouse sets the minimum standard for all schools including schools that feature majors in basket-weaving. I found when I was at SMU that virtually all of the football players that I had in my classes were very bright and were not academically under water. Yes, they did go to astronomy for their science class and biology for dummies, and found the relatively easy profs for their required classes. This is more of an indictment of the public school system than of anything else.
