Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeTwo things I found interesting in the press release (paraphrasing): 1) one of the hs coaches implied he helped put the application together that passed ncaa 2) orsini states once application is submitted the process starts.
Someone posted there might be an SAT vs ACT issue with both being acceptable to NCAA but only the ACT score being high enough for SMU ( SAT score was too low). Do you have to provide both in application? Is it possible the quotes from both sources may be 1) I provided an app that was accepted by NCAA and 2) you weren't supposed to include SAT and once it's included/submitted the process starts. Like all of this .....too much guessing but when I first read it these two quotes together seemed odd Last edited by SMU89 on Tue Jul 06, 2010 6:18 pm, edited 3 times in total.
Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeThx.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeboth the ACT and SAT are acceptable to both NCAA and SMU. There seems to be general consensus among Coaches that encourage recruits to take the ACT. The recruit made an official visit to SMU on January 29 and had to take the SAT or ACT before going on an official visit

Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeWhile both are acceptible, thought someone posted the SAT score would be no go for SMU but ACT would be fine with SMU. The application should only of had the ACT but accidentally had both the ACT and SAT or just SAT.

Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeNo I think what was said was that he scored low on the SAT. Coaches think its easier to qualify with the ACT. There is no real passing grade on either the ACT or SAT-there is a sliding scale which in conjunction with core GPA will tell you what score you need to technically qualify under NCAA Clearinghouse rules. Here are the requirements for freshman eligibility including the sliding scale. Note that with even a decent GPA you can get in with a very low SAT

Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeFound what was written (below). Assuming this info is accurate. you are correct - the SAT english portion was low and the presumed cause for denial.
As it doesn't appear necessary to have both ACT and SAT scores in your application, why would the SAT be included when the ACT apparently was better? Either you have to provide the score of all tests taken or a big error was made by having SAT in app. The poster wrote: Jeremy took the SAT in the fall and received a low score on the English portion. The SMU coaching staff suggested he take the ACT, since SMU accepted those scores, too. He did, and received a score high enough to make him NCAA eligible. This committee reviewed the SAT score and "believed" Jeremy wouldn't be able to pass English at SMU, so they rejected his admission - two days before he was to move in the dorm.
Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeWhen you register to take the SAT, you pick the schools where you want the scores sent. I'm pretty sure that makes anyone in the admissions process privy to those scores.
Re: will turner reverse the admissions committee
Makes sense. Also makes sense that if you aren't sure how you will do you shouldn't put any schools down until you get your scores back. Just like the application - only send the best score.
Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeAnd for a good football player, ballet dancer or super geek physicist with bad english grammer - The admissions board should accept the ACT and go on with their lives.

No doubt. Would love for him to have the academic opportunity.
Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeSMU already had the SAT in its files because it was a NCAA prerequisite to take his official visit on January 29. You have to at least take the ACT or SAT to go on a official visit

Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeThe point was.... throw out the SAT... knowing the score. For the dancer, phisicist or ball player.

Re: will turner reverse the admissions committeeTurner has changed the rules BUS, and torpedoed the football program. This is NOT proper by any standard and a double cross of the coach, the players, the recruits and the fans.
