Turner answers to....?

Postby cutter » Wed Jul 07, 2010 2:26 pm

Hi. Newbie here. Big JJ fan.
I am as alarmed as many as to recent admissions events.
Just wondering...... why are emails/letters/phone calls, etc being sent to Turner?
Shouldn't they be sent to whomever is his boss? Board of Trustees? Chairman of the board?

I guess, I'm thinking that Turner probably was somewhat involved in the final admissions decisions. He probably anticipated some backlash and predetermined that he would ignore it. So, complaints to him would seem to be futile?
I'm also guessing that some individuals who are part of the Circle of Champions belong to the board?
These are probably the more-vested, pro-football program-resurrection group that has real power to effect change. Shouldn't they be made aware of the degree of grass-roots malcontent generated by the actions of the admissions committee and Turner??

Just a thought.

The problems with Gerald, is that he has been entrenched in his office too long. Whether he has done a good job or poor one, he has reached a position where he answers to no one.

He really is not a supporter of athletics, its the simple truth. The alumns as Ole Miss had to start a movement to try to remove him, but unfortunately he came here first.

My position is simple. Irrepective of pro or con athletics, a college president should not have more that 7-10 years on the job, in Turner's case it is way past this point. At a school like SMU, the governance is largely non-existant. It is run like a charity, a volunteer board, that look upon it as a honor to serve, and they don't attempt to effect change, they rely on the hired director or president, who basically holds power until he decides to retire.

Um, it was the Boards involvement that got us in trouble with that little Death Penalty thing. Maybe we want the Board to stick to oversight and out of operations. It might save us from another death penalty.

I thought they'd never give that penalty again, right? --- ESPECIALLY to us!

Can't you just see the news?

(Stick to oversight? Isn't "oversight" defined as being Turner's boss?)

Got to be careful using pro-football in an SMU board.

yeah Clements/Cox would have handled this over Cocktail(s) (drinks with olives) at the Dallas Petroleum Club. Anybody still have one of those-"Gee I Miss Governor Clements" bumper stickers?

Don't give the NCAA ideas. I bet someone at the NCAA office is giving himself an Aggie high five right now saying, "Wow, why didn't I think of that!"

No but part of the post Death Penalty restructuring of the Board of Trustees made this type of Trustee control of the university nearly impossible to prevent the "old Boy" network for running the school into the ground again. These days SMU Trustees now are as likely to be Fortune 500 CEOs as they are SMU graduates. Much wider divergence of views are now represented

okay, I get the problems associated with the trustees having their fingers in direct operations of the university.
but, is there really no value in having them be directly aware of the deep concerns of an important component of the university community?
is it really inappropriate to send emails/letters/phone calls to them?

also, was it really trustee involvement that precipitated the death penalty, or was it that $$$$ to student-athletes was attached to trustee involvement?
why is it that I still hear of active trustee/booster involvement in hiring/firing of coaches and that appears to be NCAA-acceptable (wasn't Tuberville in that victim category?)?

There wouldn't have ben $$$ handed out without the Boards approval. That was the problem. Our Board was aware and approved $$$ payments.

Let me tell you a story about a University that had been on NCAA Probation for 5 times in about 10 years. The NCAA said stop that. The Chairman of the Board of Govenors (who happened to be a former Governor of Texas who was seeking reelection) decided among a small ad hoc committee of the Board that he was going to ignore the NCAA again and authorized continued payments to players because "we had a payroll to meet". He also said that he promised the NCAA that they would clean up the program although he never told the NCAA of the Plan to continue paying players noting pointedly that-"there wasn't a Bible in the room at the time."

That's been corrected. I understand a Bible is always in the room now when the NCAA visits.

okay, I think I get the generalities of the death penalty history. But, as I hear it, I keep hearing the sole/primary issue being inappropriate payment to players, however it unfolded.

so......if payments and other exchanges of benefits/money is clearly disallowed,
is it the same thing to have the board direct Turner (as indirectly, subtly, or circuitously as needed) merely to allow student-athletes that are ncaa-qualifies/good citizens to be admitted?

just asking....if you tell me it's the same issue, I'll believe you.

Ha! Ha! mr.pony-you should consider always including a small Bible in the Room when drawing any cartoon about SMU athletic officials.
